UNAIR NEWS 撎He is friendly and looks younger than people at his age. He spared an hour for UNAIR NEWS in his busy day as a lecturer, a researcher and a musician.
He was Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rubianto, drg., M.S., Sp.Perio (K), or known better as Ruby Castubee. With his casual style, the man shared his story on his hobby in Music, his busy day as academician of 51动漫 and his dream for the university.
His interest in Music was started when he was in elementary school. At that time, Ruby wanted to create something which inspired the youngsters to walk on the right path. As time went by, he learned to play the piano and the guitar from a music teacher. When he was able to play the instruments, he joined a famous group at that time called Kancil.
After Kancil, he joined a group called Oktavia. It still exists until now. Coincidentally, his house was in Jalan Untung Suropati. At that time, in the neighborhood, there were some bases of some music groups. One of them was Oktavia. In Oktavia, he played the lead guitar and used to be a drummer as well.
淚 started a band, a group of youngsters from Nort Untung Suropati. Youngsters used to gather in the area. Child of a general, military, all gathered there. From that moment, I developed my own music. After that I was recruited by Oktavia band. It is a band where students from SMAN 2 gathered. I played lead guitar. I was invited to play, even to play the drums, said Ruby.
When he was routinely played music, he reminded himself not to forget education. 淓ducation must be number one, said Ruby recalling his father檚 words.
After graduated from senior high school, he was admitted in Medicine bachelor program, Faculty of Medicine (FK), UNAIR. But his interest in Music worked like a two edge knife and he only lasted for a year. Because of his heavy activities in music, Ruby lost focus on his study and went down with a fever during last term exam week. Ruby said that at that time FK was governed by Prof. Asmino, there was a certain rule which made him expelled from FK because of his failure during exam.
In the next year, he took the admission test and admitted in FKG UNAIR. He could do his study well, while still playing music and finally got a degree as a bachelor of dentistry.
淢y friends from that time rarely become a professor but I can be one, said Ruby while remembering his old memories.
Another year, in 2018, he will be retired. The 64 year old professor is preparing his next plan in retirement. He wanted to play music even after he is retired as a lecturer. He has been learning to compose a song. As of now, he has made 30 songs.
淚 must be able to compose songs. I gathered my old friends to make a band. At the moment I檓 still playing at FKG but my songs are all copies of songs by Red Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Chrisye. But here, we can檛 take others ideas, said the fan of The Rolling Stones.

听Moral Messages
His childhood wish and his position as a lecturer made him compose soul and R 榥 B songs with lots of moral messages in the lyrics. There are a lot of messages he shared to his listeners from the two albums he released.
In one of his song, Bosan, he expressed his boredom of life which is full of rules.
淲hen we were children, we couldn檛 do many things but there檚 no solution given. Until we are adults, it stays the same. There are rules so I made a song called 叠辞蝉补苍, said Ruby.
His other song, SMS, or Senang Melihat Orang Senang was inspired by people around him who tend to be annoyed when others are happy.
There was also a song titled Ulah Cinta Anak Adam听which tells about a romance. Ruby said that love is the essence of life which can檛 be separated from human life even separation is inevitable.
淲hen musicians in love, they are easily carried but when there檚 a fight, they can be like enemies. Frankly, at that time the divorced rate was high because of impatience. I tried to send a message through Ulah Cinta Anak Adam, explained the professor born on September 8, 听1950.
There are also songs about pollution and religion(Polusi) and his love to Surabaya (Surabaya KPK) and UNAIR as his almamater(Melawan Bayang-bayang Kekalahan).
淭he latest song I wrote was Melawan Bayang-bayang Kekalahan, because I don檛 want to see UNAIR perished, only leave its name. No! UNAIR must be remembered and must exist, said Ruby.
So what messages he was trying to share? 淟ove, peace and unity, he said.
As of now, he is still playing music and he even has a plan to release his third album in 2017.
Building soul
Music has been in his life every single day, in his busy day as a dentist and a lecturer. He often plays the guitar in his office room. His practice surgery at home is full of cassettes from his favorite musicians.
淚 serve the costumers while listening to the cassettes. I talk to them while the music on. Then, when I have an idea, I write it at once, he said.
He agreed when he was asked about the effect of music to health. He once had a patient with high blood pressure, but it suddenly goes to normal when he heard his favorite song.
淭here檚 music for health. So if a dentist does not enjoy arts, it does not match. It really supports me, my soul, my life destined in dentistry, he added.
Beside playing music and practice, Ruby is active implementing University Tri Dharma. He still educates, guides and examines bachelor, master and doctoral students researches. In his opinion, life must have balance between, science, morality and arts.
In the future, he hoped that all academicians can build UNAIR soul towards its motto, Excellence with Morality. He always reminds the educators to produce new intellectuals and scholars.
淲e can go international, but we aren檛 producing goods. We are educating scholars. All scholars must be creative, expressive, free to speak and don檛 shackle them, he said. (*)
