The Importance of Negotiating Skills and Global Knowledge in Multilateral Diplomacy

UNAIR NEWS Model United Nations (MUN) Workshop themed Airlangga School of Diplomacy was held at Anatomy Room of Faculty of Medicine (UNAIR) from Saturday January 9 to Sunday January 10, 2015. Generally, this 渄iplomacy school was held to introduce MUN as a simulation of UN conference acknowledged in the world.

The standards and procedures of International conference were explained thoroughly. So there will be more people understanding about diplomatic session and negotiation in multilateral level.

The event hosted by International Relations students of FISIP UNAIR. The event was attended by Prof. Dr. Makarim Wibisono, MA-IS., MA., as the speaker. He has been Indonesian Ambassador to the UN in New York. The FISIP professor explained some technical procedures in a conference.

At least there were two topics delivered in the first day of the event. They are Negotiating Skills in Multaletral Diplomacy and Being A Global Leader and Global Citizien.

淎ll negotiation require thorough preparation. So learn all things about issues going to discuss, said the man who had been active in Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the councils of UN. 淒on檛 forget to expand your global knowledge, he said.

What is interesting from the event supported by AIESEC is, the participants were not only from UNAIR faculties, but also from high schools, general public and other university students from Surabaya or outside Surabaya such as Jakarta, Bontang, Semarang, Manado, Pontianak and Bali.

淭he event was to spread the sense of diplomacy. So the participants could understand the complete concept needed to deal with global problems, Ahmad Dzulfuqar Adi, Chief of Committee and Organizing Committee of the event said. 淭hrough this activity, the participants were expected to open their minds, practice their debating skill, improve their problem solving skill, and learn effective negotiating techniques, he added.

On the second day, UN conference was simulated and it focused on the application of problem solving skills on global issues. In the activity, there were unique prizes for the participants.

In the simulation, the participants were divided into two committes. Committee A acted as Social, Culture and Humanity Committee (SOCHUM) and discuss the refugee crisis in Syria. Committee B acted as UNICEF and discuss about minor marriages. (*)
