UNAIR NEWS – A case involving a giant technology company from China, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, has recently received public attention as the company made by Jack Ma is the largest e-commerce in the world and has a large market share.

Looking at the case, Dr. Miguel Angel Esquivias Padilla IE., M.SE as a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) 51动漫 (UNAIR) said that the market is still under government authority. “A company as big as Alibaba still has to obey the existing rules,” said the consultant in the field of International Trade and Financial Economics.

Alibaba has acquired some start-ups in China, either with the aim of expanding business or to block competitors. Considering that this is the first time the authorities have imposed such sanctions, it is possible for other regulations to emerge gradually.

The existence of these rules and sanctions indicate a delay in terms of regulation. However, this is considered good in terms of startup development. “The regulations that were still loose at that time were able to create start-ups that are now giant companies like Alibaba,” he explained.

It was previously known that Alibaba had invested in start-ups in Indonesia such as DANA, Tokopedia, and other start-ups. However, according to the Mexican-born lecturer, this case will not affect start-ups in Indonesia affiliated with Alibaba.

In Indonesia itself, the e-commerce business is still in the development stage which is far behind China. “However, with the increasing access and high internet users, it is possible that start-ups in Indonesia will have the opportunity to expand the market like what Alibaba did,” he said.

To achieve this, more innovation is needed in Indonesia, not only digital platforms, finance and logistics, but also by vendors and buyers. 淢ergers, consolidations and expansions are taking place in the Indonesian market, but at a slower pace than in China. It is a natural thing because the markets owned by these two countries are different, so they do not have an exact comparison, “he said.
