UNAIR NEWS Linguistics master program is one of the programs in Faculty of Humanities 51. The program which has just graduated two batches was admitting students in 2013. Nevertheless, the new-established program has already been accredited B.

Interviewed in his office room, Dr. Ni Wayan Sartini M.Hum., as the coordinator of Linguistics Master program explained that the program is quite different from other universities program with the same discipline. She said that the program makes cultural linguistics as its strength.

We have our own cultural linguistic trait as we are in FIB so the analysis and research is directed to culture, she said.

The doctor graduated from Universitas Udayana Bali also emphasized that even it is directed to cultural linguistics, the foundation or the basics of linguistics are not neglected entirely. Wayan believed that the special cultural linguistic trait is a way to direct the students to be more capable in analyzing cultural linguistics especially for the urban culture.

Students can also analyze the other kind, but our special trait, cultural linguistics directed towards urban culture, explained Wayan.

Beside cultural linguistics, Linguistics Master program (S2) also has other strength in the form of corpus linguistics analysis. For her, corpus linguistics has higher value and UNAIR Linguistics Master program possesses it. It is believed that it is a way to strengthen linguistics as a discipline which can be implemented in psychology and sociology.

Linguistics can be a tool for all research, for example if you want to study woman psychology or linguistics sociology, the trait is still cultural linguistics and the tool is the corpus, added Wayan.

Regarding the graduates prospects, Wayan also explained that the graduates have had various choices of profession, from lecturers, translators, media practitioners, teachers to advertising practitioners, and Wayan also stated that in the future, linguistics can reach the forensics, technology, poplitics and health.

We will also develop various models of the program. We always invite our alumni and partners to give inputs on which way the program directed to, she added.

One of the lecturers of the program, Viqi Ardaniah, M.A. Linguistics., said that the program has one thing which not many master programs have, a student association.

Our next plus point is we have a student association even though we are still quite newly established. It is useful to initiate any activities as well as for journals publication coordination, said Viqi. (*)
