UNAIR Student Researches Mimosa pudica Leaf for Antibacterial Medicine

UNAIR NEWS – Wound is easily infected by bacteria. One of examples is a Staphylococcus auerus (MRSA), bacteria normally found in the nose and on skin. The worst, if this bacterium could enter to the human body through open wound and cause infections of immune system.

Five students of Faculty of Medicine 51动漫, Safira Rahma (2015), Nur Moya Isyroqiyyah (2015), Safira Nur Ainiyah (2015), Nur Sophia Matin (2015), and Salsabila Zahra Prasetya (2016), conducted a research to the animal about inhibiting the MRSA growth by Mimosa pudica leaf extract.

This research written on research proposal of Student Creativity Program Exacta) Research (PKM-PE) entitled 淪tudy in Vivo Ekstrak Daun Putri Malu (Mimosa pudica L.) as the alternative way for open wound case Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA)”聺.

淭he research was conducted in clinical microbiology Faculty of Medicine UNAIR. This research proposal get grant in PKM in 2017 after success in assessment by kemenristekditi, Safira said

Safira said the preparation was the important thing after materials and equipment to pass the assessment of ethical commission of animal experiment. This research was conducted on mice that were injured and added MRSA bacteria. After the mice infected then it was given the daily treatment with clindamycin ointment or Mimosa pudica leaf extract at certain level. Mimosa pudica leaf extract contained polyphenols active which were sensitive and active in inhibiting growth of Staphyloccus aureus bacteria and MRSA, meanwhile, clindamycin is an antibiotic that inhibits the MRSA bacteria growth.

淭he selection of ointment we use as a control is by testing the sensitivity of clindamycin antibiotic to prove whether clindamycin is still remain able to inhibit the MRSA or not, because it could be mutated into antibiotic resistant and clindamycin could not be used as antibiotic of MRSA, Safira said, as the leader of the PKM-PE team.

She said that after experiment it needed to conduct the microbiology and histopathology test. The result was expected to change the paradigm about Mimosa pudica leaf that could be as alternative solution to inhibit the MRSA bacteria which was a cause of open wound. After the experiment to human, the product could be applied in public hospital with low cost and reachable.

淚n addition to, this research is expected to be source of information to conduct and develop another research of antimicrobial medicine from Mimosa pudica leaf, She said
