UNAIR Students Develop Web App to Control Type-2 Diabetes in Adolescents

UNAIR NEWS 搒tudentshave successfully developed accessible web app, especially for adolescent, to find out if they have symptomsof diabetes militus(DM) early on or not. After accessingthiswebapplication, everyone, especially adolescents, can predict their blood sugarlevel (mg / dL)and blood pressure(mmHg)by filling in data on age, height (cm) and weight (kg) which will be instantly converted into their body mass index.

It was conducted by students of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) UNAIR after knowing WHO (World Health Organization) prediction about the increasing number ofDiabetes Mellitus(DM)patientsin Indonesia in 2030.As the fourth country with the most DM patients in the world, in 2030 it was predicted that there will be 21,257,000 people, it will go up until 157% since 2000 which was only 8,426,000.

More disturbing data, from 2002 to 2005 there were about 3,600 new cases of type 2 DM in adolescents. In fact, DM is more difficult to treat during adolescence than during adulthood.

Determined to help controlling the number of DM patients as early as possible, fiveof FST from Department of statistics innovated through Student Creativity Program Exacta Research Field (PKM-PE).They offered a model to determine the pattern of relationship between hypertension (a major factor in diabetes) and blood sugar level (an indicator of diabetes) on the body mass index (an indicator of obesity) in patients with juvenile type 2 diabetes mellitus and applying the model into the form of web appthat areuser-friendly,cross-platform, andopen source.

Diabetes mellitusis a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas (abdominal salivary gland) produces insufficient insulin (DM type-1), or when the body does not use insulin effectively (DM type-2). Ninety percent of the world’s DM cases are DM type 2.DM is usually characterized by high blood sugar level and it occurs along with hypertension.DM and hypertension can not be cured but can be controlled by exercise and diet.

“Modeling with non-parametric regression approachspline truncatedbirespon showed existing significant correlation between blood sugar level and hypertension with the adolescent body mass index,” said Aisyah Abdullah (Statistics, 2013), the team leader of this PKMPE team.

In this team, there are also four, Dhiva Ryan Hardine (Statistics, 2013), Nonna prilly Pramesty (Statistics, 2013), Dyah Putri Rahmawati (Statistics, 2013), and Muhammad Ikbal (Statistics, 2015).

Proposal PKM-PE titled ” Blood Sugar Level Modeling on Blood Pressure and Body Mass Index of Patients with Diabetes Mellitus Type II During Adolescence Based on Nonparametric Birespon Regression approach with Spline Estimator” have passed the selection of Dikti and got research funding from Kemenristekdikti in the 2016 -2017 PKM program.

The result of the modeling is applied in the form ofweb-based applications.By accessingthe web, everyone, especially adolescents, can predict their blood sugarlevel (mg / dL)and blood pressure(mmHg)by filling in data on age, height (cm) and weight (kg) which will be instantly converted into their body mass index.

“We chose aweb-based applicationbecause it is肠谤辞蝉蝉-辫濒补迟蹿辞谤尘听,meaning it is not fixed to certain operating systems such aswindows听辞谤听android. So no need to bother downloading the application, and all platforms can access it, ” said Dhiva Ryan Hardine.

Furthermore, thewebappis alsoopen-source,meaning it can be accessed freely and openly for anyone who wants to develop, it is alsouser-friendly, very simple and easy to use for users.

“We hope this analysis can be used to minimize the number of patients withadolescent diabetes mellitustype 2, and applications that we have made can be a reference for adolescents who are diagnosed with type 2 DM to predict the levels of blood sugar and blood pressure,” added Muhammad Ikbal. (*)
