Using Coconut Shell, UNAIR Students Win 2nd Place at National Scientific Competition 2018

±«±·´¡±õ¸éÌý±··¡°Â³§“ 51¶¯Âþ delegation won 2nd place in a national writing competition entitled National Scientific Competition (NSC) 2018 on Monday, July 23.They are Puja Adi Priatna, Diah Ayu Restanti, and Indah Tri Lestari.Their paper entitled “ARLOK: Utilization of Liquid Smoke Nanoencapsulation Technology to Coconut Shell with Maltodextrin-Chitosan Biopolymer as Alternative Antibacterial for Broiler Chicken” was able to bring the team to Top five finalists.

Competition held by Animal Health Student Association, Faculty of Vocational Studies, UNAIR, is for all students of D1-S1 degree throughout Indonesia. The theme was œImproving People’s Farm Potential with the Latest Technology, the NSC 2018 participants were asked to innovate in creating ideas or products in line with the latest technological developments. After a rigorous selection, there were only five teams that had the opportunity to make a paper presentation.

Together with his team members, Puja presented his paper in front of the judges with confidence. With nanoencapsulation technology, they are able to transform coconut shell liquid waste into alternative antibiotics in broiler chickens.

Liquid smoke containing bioactive compounds of phenol, carbonyl, and acids can suppress the growth of bacterial decay and pathogens. The use of liquid smoke has been considered less practical, eventually sparked an idea to process it through nanoencapsulation techniques.

Puja explained, nanoencapsulation is the latest technology that package the active ingredients of liquid smoke in order to work more stable from environmental influences. In addition, long-lasting storage make the product more effective and efficient.

“Viewed from several aspects, the analysis and ideas in our paper contain some strategic steps in its implementation in society. So, this idea looks more potential, has good prospects, and is ready in its application plan in the future, ” he said.

The student who also joined in reasoning club was glad and proud when his team made the achievement. Moreover, Puja and his friends intended to develop the idea in laboratory-scale research.(*)
