UNAIR NEWS –Delegation of Voluntary corps Indonesia Red Cross UNAIR (KSR PMI) succeed in making achievement in Science Writing Competition Invitation of Volunteer Skills Among KSR PMI throughout Java.
On last week (14/5) in Yogyakarta, Delegation of KSR PMI UNAIR succeed achieve first winner by bringing theme entitled 淜EBUL (volcanic ash mask) with Mentha spicata, and Activated Carbon As a way to reduce the Risk of ARDs after Merapi Eruption in Sleman”
This idea came from the anxiety of lack of appropriate technology to overcome volcanic ash after eruption of Mt. Merapi in Sleman this year. By such reason member of KSR PMI UNAIR attempted making latest innovation by creating a mask that can filter the volcanic ash to avoid being inhaled.
淧reviously people used to wear surgical mask, whereas, that mask actually is not very functional because it is not designed to filter the particles of volcanic ash, “said Zaenab as coordinator in the authors.
Actually, there is another mask which is better than surgical mask namely respiratory mask. But in its use, this mask is too tight on face that leads to discomfort.
Therefore, members of KSR PMI UNAIR took initiative to create Kebul. This mask was made by utilizing extra Menta spicata or commonly known as mint leaf. In addition they also utilize activated carbon that has the ability as an adsorbent substance that can absorb substances such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and sulfuric acid.
The idea of Kebul making came from four students from various faculties, they are Zaenab from Faculty of Nursing, Khisula Risqi Andani and Wisqi Supramulyana from Faculty of Public Health and Fadhailu Chorizu from Faculty of Social and Political Science.
They created Kebul which have the benefit of absorbing harmful substances produced by volcanic ash, and provide a breathable aromatherapy. “Our tip to become a champion must convince the audience if our work is innovative and do not be down by the presentation of the opponent,” said Zaenab.
Zaenab said that the idea of making Kebul Mask still remain need to be further researched to proof activated carbon and Mentha Spicata can be as ingredient in mask to be a real product which can be useful for people.
