UNAIR NEWS –BLS Citizen Community initiated by the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation of RSUD Dr.Soetomo-FK UNAIR received another appreciation. After successfully breaking the record of the Institute of Indonesian and Global Achievement (LEPRID) in 2016, BLS Citizen Community got another award, PERSI AWARDS-IHMA 2017.

Soni Sunarso Sulistiawan, dr., Sp.An., one of the initiators of BLS Citizen Community RSUD Dr.Soetomo- FK UNAIR received the Indonesian Hospital Management Award PERSI AWARDS-IHMA 2017 Award at the Jakarta Convention Center, October 21. This award was a part of Innovation Competition of Indonesian Hospital Association (PERSI) Award 2017.

BLS Citizen Community is the embodiment of the Basic Life Support (BLS) program which has been developed by the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation of RSUD Dr.Soetomo- FK UNAIR.The focus of treatment is the occurrence of cardiac arrest that many occur in the community.

Cardiac arrest causes death in many countries. The incidence rate in Indonesia is estimated at 10 thousand people per year, or 30 people per day.The high prevalence pushed the team of doctors from Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation RSUD Dr.Soetomo- FK UNAIR to create innovation through the BLS Citizen Community.

The presence of the community was aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of people on Basic Life Support. The method applied is in-house training supported by lecture method, demonstration and practice held by RSUD Dr.Soetomo-FK UNAIR.

“The common people are trained with cardiac massage techniques by the team of doctors, in addition to various support systems such as android applications, websites, mass training methods and guidebooks have been prepared for the community,” he said.

Soni hoped that this community can guide the ordinary people so they are able to handle code blue practice with the right procedure and quickly.

Soni asserted that the most immediatre aid greatly affects the safety of patients with cardiac arrest.

“If you get immediate help from the nearest person, then the chances of survival increase up to 31.7 percent.Assuming the helper can find the rhythm of VF and the patient immediately rushed to the hospital for further treatment, “he explained.

Mass trainings been held were mass training activities involving the instructors and students such as Pondok Pesantren Gontor Putra 3 and Putri 5 Kediri in 2016.

FK UNAIR held the Basic Life Support (BHD) training for 1,656 students. The event involved 400 instructors consisting of 21 specialists of anesthesiology, 69 general practitioners, 175 students of FK UNAIR, and 135 other medical personnel.

This activity broke two records.First, the record for BHD training with the most participants.Secondly, in the women’s boarding school, the record was for BHD mass training with the most women, with 600 people.Third, in both places, mass heart massage without stopping for 15 minutes with a total of 198,000 times massage.Meanwhile, in training, they use mannequins as visual aids.

Given the prevalence of cardiac arrest happening outside the hospital is high, the presence of Basic Life Support community can help the community during emergency situations.Because an emergency can happen to anyone, anywhere, and anytime.
