UNAIR NEWS – Theprevention of dental caries in young children requires comprehensive treatment. The students and lecturers of Department of Dental Health (IKGM) Faculty of Dental Medicine 51动漫 established a Cross-Sector Advocacy Forum (Forkas) in the work area of 媼Balongsari Health Center, Surabaya.
Citing the results of research and discussions held between the academic community with medical personnel at Balongsari health center, about 97 percent of elementary school students have dental caries.
“The causes vary from behavioral to food. Therefore, cross-sector coordination is needed so that this problem can be suppressed and and the development can be prevented , “said Fevy Liyadi, coordinator of FKG field practice team in Balongsari.
The forkas consists of representatives from Tandes Sub-district, Balongsari Village, Karangpoh Sub-district, and six heads of SDN Balongsari, SDN Gadel, SDN Tandes I, SDN Tandes II, Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) Wachid Hasyim, MI Miftahul Huda, Puskesmas representatives and PKK working groups in FKG Balongsari.
“Forkas is a monitoring system of dentists’ activities as an extension of dental hygiene to their peers in elementary school, to the activities of elementary school teachers who serve as dental health cadres through their dental health exercises, and also on the activity of elementary school children visits at Balongsari health center” explained Rachmad Rifqi Fahreza, one of the student in PKL team FKG UNAIR.
“At the request of Head of Puskesmas Balongsari, hopefully later after this forum, recording and monitoring of dental health in Balongsari Puskesmas area become more organized,” added Rifqi.
In addition to listing, other programs of Forkas are training teachers and schools as dental hygienists, launching dental and oral smart books, and routinely brushing teeth every Saturday at school.
“It is unlikely that the health program will work properly, if its supervisory function is not systematically designed, we hope that well-supported cross-sector roles can be a driving force of dental health efforts in schools,” said Fevy, who is now pursuing professional education in FKG.
The student team also submitted a book on Dental and Oral Health to the puskesmas. The smart book contains instructions from how to maintain oral hygiene, tooth-brushing activities in schools to recording child dental care at Balongsari Health Center.
