To Assure Safety, FKH Students Check Qurbani Meat

UNAIR NEWS In Dhu al-Hijjah month, especially for the animal sacrifice, there are lecturers and students of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) 51 involved in the process. Their main objectives are assuring the animals health, meat especially the insides so it is safe for consumption.

It was explained by Prof. Dr. Suwarno, drh, MS, Vice Dean III FKH UNAIR during the sacrifice in Ulul Azmi Mosque 51, Campus C Mulyorejo Surabaya, Friday, September 1.

A lot of people expected the animals to be checked as FKH always holds training on how to sacrifice the animal and check the meat for mosques management in Surabaya, said Prof. Suwarno.

Because of the requests, FKH distributed and sent lecturers and students to any mosques, institutions which requested supports. There were at least 3-4 students sent.

However, it was a community service and for students it was another way to learn, by practicing real time in the community. The location was adjusted with students domicile to save the transportation cost.

It is our facultys community service, said the Virology expert FKH UNAIR, the founder AHA and ANA. AHA isAnti-Hemaglutinin Antibody, ANA is Anti Neuraminidase-Antibody.

What needs to be checked? Prof. Suwarno explained, the first important thing is the health of the animal. If it is physically healthy, the next thing to check is their insides.

First, liver, lungs and intestines should be examined. The liver sometimes shows inflammation spots and worm. The lungs should be checked for pneumonia and the intestines checked for threadworms. They can spread to the other parts of the animal.

In the animal sacrifice done in Ulul Azmi Mosque, for example, we found two cows with inflammation in the liver, but they were still safe for consumption, added Prof. Suwarno.

Besides the intestines, they also checked the oral cavity especially cows. They had to insert their hand and feel the dental composition to look for any inflammation or lumps called ǰԝ in Javanese.

If there is an inflammation, it means there is a problem and it examination. But 13 cows sacrificed in Ulul Azmi Mosque did not have any inflammation in the oral area, they were health and safe to consume, said Prof. Suwarno. (*)
