Denali Athletes Leave For United States

UNAIR NEWS At 00.40 in the morning, three athletes of Airlangga Indonesia Denali Expedition (AIDeX) left for San Francisco International Airport, the USA, from Soekarno Hatta Airport on Wednesday, May 17.

The team of Muhammad Roby Yahya (Faculty of Fisheries and Marine student), Muhammad Faishal Tamimi (Faculty of Vocational Studies student), and Yasak (efiesipe alumni) will visit Indonesian General Consulate in San Francisco, the USA.

淭he flight to San Francisco International Airport, the USA from Jakarta takes 27 hours. It will stop over for three hours in Dubai International Airport, said Maulida Rahma Fitria selaku as the treasury of the AIDEX team, who also sent them off.

One of the athletes, an operational division head, Roby, said that Denali is one of the extreme mountains. There is no porter service as we found in other mountains. Therefore, every athlete must practice dragging weight of 50 kg by themselves.

The weather in Denali is also unpredictable. They will face the unpredictable summer temperature. The warmest temperature is minus ten degrees Celcius, but if there is a storm it can reach minus 80 degrees Celcius.

淟ooking at this extreme temperature, the team has planned for acclimatization or practice with the equipment, said Faishal.

One of the alumni of UNAIR who sent them off, Paulus Gatot Rahardja, asked them to look after their health during their journey.

淒enali is not like any other mountains. You must eat twice as much, stay healthy, you are the assets of Nation, said Paulus one of the members of Cartenz summit expedition in Papua in 1994.

Paulus also reminded them to always communicate with families and partners of expedition and always pray. 淒on檛 forget praying, said Paulus.

AIDeX team will start their expedition for 18 or 22 days. They left for Jakarta on May 10 then left for the USA on May 17 while the climb starts on May 21 until June 9.

Denali is not the first summit reached by UKM Wanala. They have been to four of the seven summits in the world, Cartens Summit, Mt. Jaya Wijaya (Indonesia/1994), Kilimanjaro (Tanzania/2009), Elbrus (Russia/2011), and Aconcagua (Argentina/2013).

After Denali, they plan to continue their expedition to Vinson Massif in the Antarctic and Everest in Himalaya to complete their seven summit expedition.
