The Director of Environment at BAPPENAS, Priyanto Rohmatullah, SE, MA, attended on behalf of BAPPENAS.
This international symposium was themed: “Strengthening the Circular Economy through Sustainable Green Chemistry.” In line with the symposium’s theme, Priyanto underscored the importance of implementing a circular economy in Indonesia. “The Indonesian government has prioritized the circular economy as a long-term development agenda from 2025 to 2045,” he stated.
Circular economy agenda
For years, Indonesia has pursued various agendas related to the circular economy as the circular economy has been internalized within the National Medium Length-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2020-2024. “Indonesia has also integrated the circular economy into the RPJMN for the years 2020-2024,” Priyanto remarked.
Furthermore, the government has implemented several programs, including capacity development programs, building awareness, and enhancing knowledge of products related to the circular economy.
Priyanto mentioned that Indonesia has also laid out future plans. For example, the government is drafting a roadmap and action plan for the circular economy. Additionally, the government is planning a circular economy platform, circular economy pilot projects, and conducting monitoring and evaluation of the system.
Role of universities
Moreover, Priyanto highlighted the need for contributions and roles from universities, including UNAIR, in Indonesia. He emphasized that higher education institutions can play a vital role in driving the implementation of the circular economy. “Academics play a crucial role in initiating the transformative systems needed to realize the circular economy,” he stated.
Not only universities, but the government and community also play pivotal roles in supporting the implementation of the circular economy. His institution opens up opportunity to collaborate with universities, communities, and society in ensuring the success of circular economy implementation in Indonesia. “We eagerly anticipate future collaboration with our partners to implement the circular economy in Indonesia,” he emphasized.
