UNAIR NEWS has added another name to its list of distinguished alumni. Suminto SHubInt MSc PhD, a graduate of International Relations, has been appointed Director General of Financing and Risk Management (PPR) at Indonesia檚 Ministry of Finance.

Guided by his personal motto, 渓ife is colorful, Suminto has embraced life檚 challenges and responsibilities with gratitude and optimism, from his early years to his current role in national leadership. 淟ife is colorful. It is full of experiences worth celebrating and appreciating, he said.

Born in Sragen, Central Java, on July 7, 1972, Suminto grew up in a modest merchant family. During middle and high school, he was active in student leadership, scouting, and competitions, representing his region at the 1986 National Jamboree and consistently winning provincial-level P4 quiz contests.

At UNAIR檚 Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), he pursued International Relations, where his passion for knowledge and reading deepened. He delved into social, political, and philosophical works, particularly those by Soedjatmoko and LP3ES intellectuals, which broadened his understanding of global affairs.

He graduated in 1995 as the fastest and top-ranked student with cum laude honors and received scholarships from the Higher Education Directorate General (PPA) and the Djarum Foundation. His university years were also marked by editorial work for Resolusi magazine, contributions to Retorika, and leadership roles in the student association and faculty senate.

Suminto began his career as a civil servant at the Ministry of Finance in 1996. He later earned a master檚 degree at Hiroshima University and a doctorate at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Japan. Rising through the ranks, he held three posts as Expert Staff to the Minister of Finance before being appointed Director General of Financing and Risk Management. 淟earning never ends. Every assignment is a chance to grow, and it must be approached with humility, he reflected.

His influence extends beyond Indonesia. He has served as Executive Director at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB); Governor and Chairman of the Governing Council at the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD); Steering Committee and Plenary Member of the Financial Stability Board (FSB); G20 Finance Deputy; and APEC Finance Deputy. He currently sits as Governor at the OPEC Fund for International Development and as a member of the Supervisory Board for Indonesian Aid.

He is also credited with pioneering the world檚 first sovereign global green sukuk in 2018, valued at USD 1.25 billion, positioning Indonesia as the largest global green sukuk issuer, with cumulative issuance now reaching USD 7.7 billion.

As UNAIR alumnus, Suminto remains committed to integrity and public service. He lives by a guiding belief: 淜hoirunnas anfauhum linnas the best people are those who bring the most benefit to others.

Today, as Director General of Financing and Risk Management, he oversees state budget financing, infrastructure funding, creative financing, and the management of national financial risks. Despite his strategic position, Suminto is known for his humility, standing as an example of how UNAIR alumni continue to serve and contribute to the nation.
