UNAIR NEWS – In the framework of community empowerment, Faculty of Vocational Studies UNAIR has held another Science and technology for the Community (IbM) community service in Selogabus Village, Parengan Subdistrict, Tuban, Saturday, July 22.This activity is also a pillar of Higher Education Tri Dharma, that is dedication. This IbM community service do not only share, but also exchange ideas with the community.
“We are from the Faculty of Vocational Studies whose goal is to educate students to be ready for professional world, intending to share experiences and exchange ideas. It is not patronizing because we believe that the people here also have more experience, ” said Retno Sri Wahjuni, MS., Drh, as the head of the committee who has also been awarded Satya Lancana Karya Satya XX by the President of the Republic of Indonesia.
On this occasion, IbM community service team described various efforts to make complete feed of herbs, fermented feed, and concentrate., with additional knowledge about biogas and cow weighting.
“This activity is very important for the development of livestock management as the increasing need for meat. Then there should be an effort to be self-sufficient in food, especially in the meat sector, “said Sukiman, Secretary of Selogabus Village.
Prof.Dr.Mirni Lamid, drh., MP., explained and shared her experience of animal feed coherently to the public. The attending participants are from Selogabus and Margorejo village, especially cattle breeders. So the activity is not only one direction, but there is a two-way interaction.
“Cow feed is important.Good feed will make the cattle grow well too. What is eaten will be reflected in the weight of the cow, “explained Professor.Mirni.
In this occasion, Prof.Mirni said that in Indonesia has two seasons, rain and dry.In rainy season, the grass can become the main feed.In contrast to summer, when supplies of grass are limited. An alternative is needed, the feed from agricultural waste such as rice straw, sugarcane leaf, or corn trees.
“Cattle will stop eating when they are full and get enough nutrients. For example, feeding rice straw will only make them full, but it has low nutritional value.Cows only gain weight for 0.1-0.2 kg, ” she explained.
Therefore, Prof. Mirni encouraged the community to process the feed in advance with ammonia (addition of urea) or fermentation using Probiotics (eg EM4).
Unlike other community service, this time the IbM community service team did not hesitate to go directly to the fermentation feed making, complete herbal feed, and concentrate. The process was done collaboratively with each other hand in hand with the community. The enthusiasm of the community increases as there was free towel, and they could bring home the processed feed.Furthermore, every month the cattles are monitored. So the activities do not stop at the counselling, but also it is also sustainable.
