FIB Holds International Conference on Urban Studies

UNAIR NEWS“ 51¶¯Âþ continues to take steps to align itself with world’s best universities.One of the efforts is to hold an international event.An event by Faculty of Humanities from 8 to 9 December 2017 at Wyndham Surabaya Hotel.
The event titled 4th International Conference on Urban Studies (ICUS): Border and Mobility, was a collaboration of Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University, Thailand.

This international conference focuses on observing the impact of urban mobility and its relation to border issues.Issues highlighted were education, advocacy, politics, economic, social, and security.In the discussion, they were connected also to gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, identity and so forth.

Themes discussed were Borders in global research, Borders in locality, Borders of identity movements, Borders in body, well-being and of being human, Borders in politics of sexuality and gender identity struggles, Borders in policymaking, Borders in arts, Borders in media and communications technology, Borders in space and place, Borders in maritime security and issues, Borders in language, culture and multilingualism, Borders of history, Borders in literature and culture, and Borders in education.

Keynote Speakers presented were Michele Ford (University of Sydney, Australia), and Brenda Yeoh (National University of Singapore, Singapore).While Invited speakers who took part in the plenary session were Thor Kerr (Curtin University, Perth, Australia), Jan van Der Putten (Hamburg University, Germany), Freek Colombijn (Vrije University, Amsterdam, the Netherlands), and Bekisizwe Ndimande (University of San Antonio, Texas, the United States of America).

Also, Melani Budianta (The University of Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia), I Made Andi Arsana (Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia), and Diah Ariani Arimbi, Irfan Wahyudi, Lina Puryanti, and Baiq LS Wardhani (they come from 51¶¯Âþ , Surabaya, Indonesia).There were also Umaporn Wittayasin, Nalinee Thongprasert, Ananya Dechakhamphu (from Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University, Thailand), and Sappasiri Songsukrujiroad (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Mahasarakham University, Thailand).

The attending participants were from many universities even from abroad, such as the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, South Africa, and so forth.There were 100 paper presenters, and 50 participants.

Dean of FIB Diah Ariani Arimbi, PhD, said that her institution has special attention on global scale events.This can not be separated from UNAIR wish to be on Top 500 world’s best universities.The theme was closely related to the world that is now has no borders.“People can move from one country to another easily and quickly,” he said.

This opportunity, Diah added, was also worthy as a moment of discussion and network expansion, to get to know each other.So in the future, there can be synergy.

In his speech, Vice Rector III UNAIR Prof.Amin Alamsjah said that the problems on urban area and territorial are always interesting.Every time, the problem of urbanism is always there with times.“What is done in this conference is to study it scientifically, to produce an applicable solution in the community,” he said.(*)
