UNAIR NEWS – Being old is a certainty.However, not everyone can feel happy old age in the midst of a beloved family.That’s how hundreds of elderly people living in Jambangan Nursing Home, Surabaya.Different backgrounds and reasons make them spend the old days in the nursing home.
Therefore, students of B18 Faculty of Nursing , held a variety of interesting activities involving hundreds of elderly living in Jambangan Nursing Home, Thursday, September 21. As the supervisor, Setho Hadiyusmana, S.Kep., Ns., M.NS., said that the event held on the Islamic New Year’s day is purposely intended to share happiness with the elderly.
The event started with laughter therapy and then after the therapy of laughter, the elderly was invited around the south of Surabaya by riding odong-odong.They went around the shady streets until they had a short break in the courtyard of Al Akbar National Mosque.
“The elderly left by their families.They only have activities in the nursing home without any activities outside.Therefore after we have the therapy, we invited them out to ride odong-odong.Hopefully they are happy, “explained Setho.
There are different activities routinely held each year.Setho said the difference in activities this year with the previous year was the involvement of foreign students.For him, by involving foreign students, indirectly provide education and show the community service activities conducted by FKP students.
“This is our routine activity.Only this is the first time we invite foreign students.This is to introduce the nursing home model in Indonesia to them.In addition, the community service this time also invite the elderly to ride odong-odong, “said the master graduate of University of Adelaide.
Finally, Setho hoped that this activity will enable students to have empathy for their parents.In addition, he hoped that this activity can train students to appreciate every parents™ role.
“For the elderly, hopefully they stay healthy and have long life.We all know the end is death, we hope even in death they can be happy, “he concluded.(*)
