UNAIR NEWS Nurse is one of the affected professions by global competition. In the era of ASEAN Economic Community (MEA), ASEAN countries nurses are permitted to work in Indonesia. To face the competition and to work abroad, their competence should be reinforced.
According to the Dean of Faculty of Nursing (FKp) 51 (UNAIR), Prof. Nursalam, S.Kp., M.Nurs, Indonesian nurses need more improvements to compete in free trade era. Therefore, nursing education institution in Indonesia has responsibility to produce quality nurses.
Competences needed to improve are cognitive, affective, and psychomotor. Then after that, networking should be extended. We (FKp UNAIR) is building our network abroad. Thats our target, said Prof. Nursalam.
Networking expansion by FKp were from student exchange programs and researches. Avans University, Holland, andRhode Island University are two foreign universities cooperating with FKp UNAIR.
In addition, to compete in a free trade era, nurses should be competent on scientific field, foreign language proficiency, and technology. Prof. Nursalam reminded the community to change the defense mindset.
There is a belief which say that individuals should not seek for knowledge or work far from their hometown. It should be changed too, said Prof. Nursalam.
Uniformity of Quality
In Indonesia there are about 313 institutions which provide nursing education. They consist of degrees, from a three year degree to professional degree. So, nursing graduates in Indonesia are abundant.
But, Prof. Nursalam who was also graduated from UNAIR doctoral program, said that the quality of the nursing education based on accreditations is still varied. UNAIR professor on nursing elaborated that 5% of the nursing institutions accredited A, 25% accredited B and 70% accredited C.
In the end of 2015, UNAIR FKp bachelor program of Nursing was accredited A by Institution of Independent Accreditation for Indonesian Health Higher Education (LAM PTKes). From nursing competence test 2015, the success rate of FKp UNAIR nurses reached 98%.
Simmilar with Prof. Nursalam, Laily Hidayati, S. Kep, Ns., M.Kep, in the lecturing staff of Medical Surgical Nursing Department, FKp UNAIR, said that the quality of Indonesian nursing education should be improved to produce quality nurses.
Nurses competence should be the same, either from Surabaya or from Papua, so the healthcare service quality given to society is also the same in Indonesia, said Laily. (*)
