Leiden University Professor: Lots of Crime, Less Prisons in Indonesia

UNAIR NEWS Master program of Law and Development Sciences (MSHP) of Postgraduate School 51动漫 (UNAIR) held another seminar which invited a foreign professor. 淪tadium General: Legal Research and its Development was honored with the presence of Prof. Dr. Adriaan Bedner, a professor from Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Government and Development, Faculty of Law, Leiden University.

It was the third time for him sharing insights with UNAIR students. Besides Prof Adriaan as a speaker, there was Herlambang Perdana Wiratraman, S.H., M.A., the secretary of Center of Human Rights Law Studies (HRLS) UNAIR.

In the occasion, Prof. Adriaan presented his article, Indonesian Legal Scholarship and Jurisprudence as an Obstacle for Transplanting Legal Institution. The article was published in Hague Journal on the Rule of Law. Legal research is an important principle to understand how law in a country taking essential roles in the implementation of development program. He also explained the factors such as governmental fragmentation, corruption, political system malfunction, and many others.

The professor who speaks Bahasa Indonesia fluently also elaborated about law enforcement condition in Indonesia and Holland. One of the things was on the phenomena of crime and the number of prisons of both countries.

淚n Holland, more prisons triggers a decrease on the crime rate. While in Indonesia, there are more crimes but less prisons, said Prof. Adriaan.

As a form of Three Values (Tri Dharma) of University, as stated by Herlambang, the result of this seminar could be material for legal science development in Indonesia.

淭he seminar was aimed to encourage innovation on legal research as well as develop legal science. Furthermore to develop legal sensitivity, also social justice issues, said Herlambang.

淚nviting guest lecturer with quality is necessary as it would promote scientific development, especially in Postgraduate School, said Dr. H. Suparto Wijoyo, MSHP Coordinator.

Prior to inviting a professor from Leiden University, MSHP has also invited guest lecturer from Osaka University, Japan to discuss environmental development. The program which has been running for three years tried its best to gain reputation and extend its network from colleagues not only in Indonesia but also at international level.

Suparto also stated that in Leiden, MSHP is in demand as it is the only program in Indonesia which offers scientific and contextual legal sciences as well as considers the dynamic development. Thus, MHSP and Leiden has made an agreement to excellent collaborations. Even Prof Adriaan was willing to give lecture, be a consultant, also supervise thesis at MSHP.

淗opefully from the program, the students won檛 be skillful master on regulations, but also excellent on development policy. This country needs people who understand law in the context of development, said Suparto.

Excellent relationship between MSHP UNAIR and Leiden University was because of scientific proximity factor and compatibility. Moreover, UNAIR lectures have also made achievements during their studies in Leiden. It established a special connection between UNAIR and Leiden University. (*)
