UNAIR NEWS “ Nowadays, the independence of journalism is being tested.ÌýIt is found difficult in maintaining idealism, many are shaken by economic pressure (commercialization).ÌýAs a result journalism and journalistic practices face a great dilemma.
It was the topic studied in the dissertation of Nanang Krisdinanto, Drs., M.Si., entitled ” Runtuh dari Dalam, Tekanan Komersialisasi terhadap Pagar Api Jurnalistik di Indonesia“.ÌýThe dissertation was prepared under the guidance of Prof. Dr.ÌýHotman Siahaan, Drs., and Co-Promoter Prof. Rachmah Ida, Dra.,., Ph.D.
Successfully defended his dissertation, both in closed examination and open examination on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, Nanang Krisdinanto earned a Doctorate degree in Social Sciences from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) .
Former journalist ofSurabaya Postwas graduated with praise.ÌýHe is the 204th Doctor of Social Science FISIP UNAIR.ÌýHis undergraduate degree was from Politics FISIP UNAIR and his master™s degree was from Communication Science and Media Program, also in FISIP UNAIR.
Answering the examiners in the Open Examination at Adi Sukadana Room FISIP UNAIR led by Dean of FISIP.ÌýDrs.ÌýFalih Suaedi, M.Si, a lecturer of Communication Sciences at Widya Mandala University, explained that the unsteady attempt to maintain the journalism ideals made journalists œcave in from within” the editorial space.
Why, because it seems to be something that is not discussed that in journalistic ideas, journalistic doxa whose credibility is maintained by orthodoxa (separation of editorial space and business space), was challenged from the heterodoxa that synergize between the editorial space and business space.
In his research, Nanang revealed, not a few journalists compromise with commercialization, so as to put aside the fire of journalism (public interest).ÌýThe presence of this commercial regime makes ad position important in the media revenue structure, even determining the sustainability of the newspaper.
For advertisers, it will be a metaphor called ”advertisers muscle“.ÌýThis metaphor can have the power to dictate, control, and influence journalistic practices.ÌýHis research results are recognized by most newspaper editor thatadvertisers muscleis dangerous, even will destroy the fence of journalistic fire from within (editorial).
“In other words, the journalistic fire fence is placed in a diametrical position between ‘life and death’.ÌýDeveloping an oppositional idea that maintaining a journalistic fire fence means the death of a newspaper, while crossing a journalistic fire fence means the safety of newspaper, “said Nanang.
Based on the factual findings in the study, Nanang is concerned about the continuity (future) of journalism.ÌýIt was none other than the change of journalistic doctrine.ÌýThis is what destabilizes journalists’ professionalism in journalistic practice, or which has been based on journalistic ethics and maintains the importance of journalistic independence for the benefit of the public.
“Compromising make the position of heterodoxy journalism stronger.ÌýIn contrast, journalistic orthodoxa continues to weaken.ÌýIf this is strong, there will be a time when journalistic heterodoxy will become a journalistic documentation.ÌýThis means that the violating of journalistic fire fence will be considered legitimate, normal, correct and acceptable journalistic practice, “Nanang said.
In a short time, this condition can benefit the calculation of the media industry, because there are benefits to the ad.ÌýBut in the long term it would be detrimental because the media could lose the trust of the public due to its neglected interests.ÌýTherefore Nanang Krisdinanto hoped the world of newspapers to re-enforce the journalistic fence and keep the space between the editorial room and business space.Ìý(*)
