UNAIR NEWS There is always insight gained by students sent on student exchange program, including two students of Faculty of Public Health 51动漫 who have just been back from Thailand.
They are Elly Nu檓a Zahroti (student of Health Administration and Policy program) and Yosefin (student of Nutrition program) who have had their student exchange program from March to April 2017.
Elly and Yosefin had determined to learn a lot in public health during their stay in Thailand. According to Elly, Thailand is one of the countries she wanted to visit as it has a good health insurance and marketing system.
淗ealth insurance system in Thailand which is various and achieved universal coverage so health treatments are completely free except for some diseases. In Thailand, the system does not implement gradual treatment, unlike in Indonesia which must go through the first health facility first. There are no midwives, so maternal healthcare is performed always in hospital, said Elly, one of the exchange students in Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University (UBRU).
Before the student exchange program, Elly and Yosefin fulfilled the requirements needed. Yosefin who was sent to Mahidol University said that she just required Test of English as a Foreign Language(TOEFL) certificate, latest Academic Result Report and Curriculum Vitae.
淎fter that, there was a selection. Thanks God, I got the scholarship from FKM UNAIR. The length of exchange program was from March to April 2017, said Yosefin.
In FKM Exchange program, students should not be worried with financial issues. Both universities have funded the travel, accommodation and transportation in Thailand.
For three weeks there, both have gained a lot of experiences. They did not learn in classes as it was mid-semester holiday. However, they learned a lot of lessons, one of them was about their curriculum which is dominated with practical work.
Elly and Yosefin said that FKM students of UBRU and Mahidol can give treatments to patients. They can tend and stitch wound, prescribed medication and performed injection. They are basic clinical skills.
淪tudents are given opportunities to do those four things. Besides practical work, they also work as promotive and preventive agents in community especially when they are in a community with no nurses or doctors, said Elly who went to Thailand with her partner, Regina.
Yosefin had a different experience. Her most exciting experience was when she took part in a community service program. 淢ost exciting thing was when we were having a community service either in hospital or in the field. I was participating in a community practice with senior citizens. So, we really visit them and check their health condition, she said.
During the field visit and meeting the senior citizens, there was one session for psychological service. Yosefin thought that it was interesting and she also took part in entertaining the senior citizens by singing, dancing together and listening to their complaints.
淪o I was touched. It really moved me as the treatment given was different between the individuals and adjusted with the patient condition, said Yosefin.
Yosefin continued 淎lmost 70 percent of their activities was practical and 30 percent of them was theoretical. So, we really visited the community.
During their stay in Thailand, there was an important lesson learned by Elly in health. It was about tolerance.
淚slam became a minority but it the locals do not look down on us. We had difficulty to pray in public places. But the locals provide if we need it. There is always politeness, if we want them to respect us and heed ourselves, respect the elderlies, she said.
