UNAIR NEWS – Settlement area around Jagir riverbank until Jagir water gate in Surabaya city is inhabited by lower class community.Most of them are scavengers and street singers.
The community is dominated by thugs, scavengers and street singers.This condition directly leads the children to become one of those because the take people around them as role models.They often meet and they have big influence on their lives.
Such circumstances affect children around the riverbank of Jagir to have hard character, high tone of speech, negative vocabulary from imitating the people around them, lack of discipline, and weak moral education instilled in the family environment.
From these facts, changes are needed, both in mindset, moral enhancement, and attention, so that later they become a better generation from people around him.They will not be parts of juvenile delinquency and be agents of change.
In addition they also need guidance and attention to create positive environmental conditions for the character building of the younger generation.Since almost all of the population is Muslim, moral education through religion should be taught to children and adolescents in the region with the method of “Mendemo dengan Mengaji” program.
Five students from two faculties at who are members of the Community Student Creativity Program (PKMM) team are M. Baktiyar Prayoga Adihutomo, Juliane Kartika Putri, and Widyanti (all three from the Faculty of Humanities) and Oky Sapto Mugi Saputro and Nourmaharits Muhammad from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP).
“Mendemo dengan Mengaji” proposal has successfully passed the selection of Dikti, thereby entitled to obtain development fund from Kemenristekdikti in PKM program 2018.
Described by M. Baktiyar Prayoga, as the head of this team, the program “Mendemo dengan Mengaji” is a joint program with the executive partner from Urban Care Community(UCC) to overcome the increasingly troubling moral decadence of the citizens.That’s why this program is conducted in Jagir Surabaya.
This program is tailor-made to empower Jagir children and adolescents.To be easily accepted, the PKMM team applied the Viral learning model (visual and role play), aimed to maintain the spirit of children’s learning.So that the participants will not feel bored.
Baktiyar Prayoga added that mengaji in this context is the soul management, to be better than before.Sometimes a person has strength point or a good academic, but his morale is not good enough to use it.
“Therefore, moral education is important in every activity, because if our morality is good then the others will go well too,” added Baktiyar.
UNAIR student team hope that with this program, children and adolescents in this area will become a generation with good morality, strong character, discipline, , respectful character and strong moral foundation in their life.They are not easily influenced by negative things.
“And we also hope that this program will not only be implemented on Jagir riverbank, but also in other regions.That way we can get the best result and it is our pride to help Surabaya City Government in an effort to overcome moral decadence in the environment of children and adolescents, “said Baktiyar.(*)
