Forensic Experts Emphasize the Importance of Autopsy to Investigate Facts in Kanjuran Tragedy

The Criminal Law Department of the Faculty of Law, 51动漫 (FH UNAIR) in collaboration with the Center for Anti-Corruption and Criminal Policy Studies FH UNAIR and Airlangga for Legal Drafting and Professional Development FH UNAIR held ah FGD titled “Criminal Responsibility for the Kanjuruhan Malang Tragedy” on Friday (25 /11/2022) in Pancasila Hall, Building A FH UNAIR. The discussion, which was held offline, invited experts from various fields, including UNAIR forensic expert Prof. Dr. Ahmad Yudianto and Chair of the Indonesian Association of Forensic Doctors for the East Java Region (PDFI East Java), dr. Nabil Bahasuan, SpFM., S.H., M.H.

Prof. Ahmad Yudianto said that after forming a fact-finding team and carrying out an examination, an autopsy and surgery should be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

“To determine the cause of death from the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy, we will find out over time after the team was formed. To determine the cause of death must go through an autopsy. The cause of death cannot be generalized because the cause of death is individual. Can the cause of death for an individual from the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy be generalized to cause the deaths of hundreds of people? Well, this must be investigated. The autopsy stage was also carried out under the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP). Before an autopsy is carried out, there is action to bury the body and take samples first. An autopsy is carried out to determine the exact cause of death,” said Prof. Ahmad Yudianto.

Prof. Ahmad Yudianto said that in order to analyze the causes of death, it is necessary to study and examine the many existing things. This fact-finding, he said, must be carried out seriously.

Then, dr. Nabil Bahusuan also emphasized that forensic medicine exists to find out the exact cause of an event. However, the autopsy procedure that will be carried out to find the precise cause of death of the victim in the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy can only be carried out with the permission of the victim’s family and cannot be arbitrary. If there is a request from the victim’s family, he continued, then an autopsy can be carried out.

He also emphasized that forensics is there to find the exact cause of death for the victims of the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy. He hopes that the presence of forensics can shed light on the problem of the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy.

“In forensic medicine, if something is not where it should be, there must be a reason. That is why forensics must find out the facts about the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy. The autopsy we are doing must have a request or permission from the victim’s family before it can be carried out. We will also carry out laboratory tests. Will the victim’s family get justice with the completion of this autopsy? We leave everything to the applicable legal mechanism. The suspect is already there, and the autopsy results will also be announced soon. The law must work. It cannot continue like this. The autopsy results will at least be representative of supporting the ongoing legal mechanism. Justice must be upheld, said dr. Nabil Bahasan.
