Pharmacy Experts Say Tear Gas Can Be Dangerous in Confined Spaces

The Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy has yet to find a light. Nearly two months have passed, but until today the facts of the disaster have yet to be revealed with certainty, what happened, and who should be responsible.

The Criminal Law Department of the Faculty of Law, 51动漫 (FH UNAIR), in collaboration with the Center for Anti-Corruption and Criminal Policy Studies FH UNAIR and Airlangga for Legal Drafting and Professional Development FH UNAIR held an FGD titled “Criminal Responsibility for the Kanjuruhan Malang Tragedy” on Friday (25 /11/2022) in Pancasila Hall, Building A FH UNAIR. The discussion held offline, invited experts from various fields ranging from forensic experts, criminal law, psychology, pure chemistry, pharmacy, and human rights.

UNAIR Professor of Pharmacy, Prof. Dr. Dwi Setyawan, S.Si., M.Sc., Apt., was one of the speakers at the forum. He explained the composition of tear gas. He said that Tear gas contains Chlorobenzylidene Malononitrile (CS), and Chloracetophenone (CN). Compound 2-clorobenzalmalononitrile (CS) is a toxic compound used as a determining component of tear gas.

“This material has been given a warning. The ingredients for tear gas are toxic materials. This toxic material will impact if it is directed into a closed room and the concentration is raised in powder and gas. The impact has a disturbing effect on the body, both for the eyes and other body parts. Of course, this effect will decrease if tear gas is applied to an open space where oxygen access is still available,” explained Prof. Dwi Setiawan.

Prof. Dwi Setyawan also explained how to handle if exposed to tear gas. He said the first aid for burning in the eyes is rinsing with water to eliminate the chemicals. However, you must be careful because rinsing with water can also increase pain. In addition, taking analgesic drugs can also relieve eye pain.

Prof. Dr. Fahimah Martak, M.Sc.said that tear gas can cause shortness of breath, blurred vision, and other symptoms. If it’s inhaled a little, it won’t cause death, but if the body’s condition is not fit, it can have an impact.

“Tear gas is in powder form, depending on the structure, type, and composition of how dangerous this tear gas is. In addition, other factors such as the physical condition of humans, also have an effect. Of course, all chemicals can be dangerous, namely in excessive doses and under certain conditions,” concluded Prof. Fahimah.
