Proud! UNAIR FH Team Wins 1st Place in National Law Debate Competition

The MYMA FH UNAIR delegation made another achievement in the legal debate competition. This time, it was the turn of Rindang Syafa’at (2020), Tazkia Sahria Aulia Mahfud (2020), Anik Setyawati (2020), Septi Tri Cahyanti (2021), Cahyaning Puspita Nusantara (2021), and Karine Luisa Hartono (2022) to win the Champion I National Law Debate Competition XIII which Tanjungpura University held on March 11-12 2023.

Through an interview with FH News on Tuesday (21/3/2023), Rindang, as head of the delegation, said the motions they got tended to be mainstream for competition.

“One of the motions we got was the imposition of the death penalty as a constitutional violation. Then, there is also a motion regarding a special law for LGBTQ+ people so that their rights are accommodated, as well as several other motions,” said Rindang.

As for the preparation for the competition itself, continued Rindang, it was effective only a week after the release of the debate motion.

“The motion was only given one week before the competition, whereas usually, the motion is released one month before the competition. So, it’s difficult for us to arrange practice times and match schedules, especially since three of us are also preparing a thesis proposal,” he explained.

Rindang revealed that this was the first time MYMA had sent a delegation to participate in the Tanjungpura University Law Debate Competition. He and his team did not expect to win 1st place the first time they participated in this competition.

“Thank God we were able to win 1st place. Even though it was carried out in full online, we were also a little nervous because the opponents were quite difficult. Round by round we need to improve to maintain the rankings. At the time of the announcement, we could finally breathe a sigh of relief because the preparation, which was very short and time-consuming, had finally paid off,” he said.

In closing, Rindang added tips to win the debate competition. He suggested diligently reading and updating on current issues. In addition, he also advised getting used to socializing because it indirectly can train verbal skills in debating.
