From July 5 to July 14, 2025, I had the privilege of joining the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Selangor for a 10-day independent internship. Located in Ampang, Selangor, this experience was not only a crucial part of my veterinary education at 51动漫 but also a deeply enriching journey into the real-world application of animal welfare, shelter management, and public outreach.
Daily Duties and Shelter Operations
Each day began promptly at 8:00 AM and was filled with essential shelter tasks. From feeding dogs and cats to cleaning kennels and checking for signs of illness, I quickly learned that shelter work requires both consistency and compassion. These daily responsibilities emphasized the importance of hygiene and routine in maintaining animal health.
Beyond routine care, I was also involved in enrichment and socialization sessions, where I interacted directly with the animals. These moments were instrumental in understanding how to read body language, respond to fear or stress, and build trust攅specially with animals recovering from abandonment or trauma.
Observing Veterinary Procedures
While my primary role was in animal care and support, I had the valuable opportunity to observe basic veterinary procedures, such as deworming, vaccinations, and health checks. Watching the medical team work with gentle efficiency taught me the importance of calm handling, patience, and empathy in veterinary settings. These experiences strengthened my confidence and provided insight into real clinical environments.
Public Outreach and Adoption Campaign
One of the highlights of the internship was participating in SPCA Selangor檚 weekend adoption campaign. I assisted in providing information to potential adopters, handing out educational brochures, and advocating for responsible pet ownership. This role pushed me beyond clinical skills and into public communication and education, helping me develop a stronger voice for animal advocacy.
Reflections and Takeaways
This internship was more than a checklist of tasks攊t was a transformative experience. I came away with not only improved practical skills but also a greater understanding of the shelter檚 role in the community. I witnessed how education, compassion, and teamwork can change lives攂oth animal and human.
Participating in briefings, case discussions, and fieldwork gave me a well-rounded perspective on the daily operations and challenges of an animal shelter. Most importantly, it nurtured a deep sense of empathy, responsibility, and commitment to animal welfare攙alues I will carry into my future as a veterinarian.
