Enhancing Veterinary Clinical Skills Through a Small Animal Clinic Internship

From July 2 to 15, 2025, I undertook a clinical internship at a small animal veterinary clinic that provides medical services to companion animals, especially dogs and cats. As a veterinary medicine student, this internship aimed to strengthen my practical clinical skills and deepen my understanding through direct exposure to real-life cases. The internship took place on working days and involved a variety of activities, ranging from observation to hands-on practice under the guidance of the supervising veterinarian and clinic staff.

On the first day, the program began with a briefing and orientation. I was introduced to the staff and doctors, given a tour of the facilities including the consultation rooms, treatment area, operating theatre, inpatient area, and isolation room. I also received explanations about the standard operating procedures (SOP), hygiene protocols, and workplace safety measures that must be upheld throughout the internship.

In the following days, I observed various clinical cases involving dogs and cats. I learned how veterinarians performed physical examinations, identifying clinical signs such as fever, vomiting, wounds, and digestive or urinary issues. I also became actively involved by assisting with animal restraint during examinations, administering medications orally and topically, and measuring vital parameters such as temperature, pulse rate, and respiratory rate (TPR). One of the most memorable experiences was observing minor surgical procedures like sterilization, where I learned about aseptic techniques and the anesthesia process prior to surgery.

During the internship, I was also introduced to the use of a faecal scoring system, which veterinarians used to facilitate communication with pet owners when discussing their pet檚 bowel movements. This system was helpful in diagnosing gastrointestinal issues more effectively. I also took part in case discussions, where I saw firsthand the importance of medical records in determining appropriate treatments and follow-up care for patients.

An important aspect I learned was the value of effective communication between veterinarians and pet owners. I observed how doctors conveyed diagnoses clearly and empathetically, providing education on topics such as vaccination, parasite control, nutrition management, and routine health monitoring. This experience highlighted how crucial communication skills are in building trust between veterinarians and clients.

This internship experience aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, it supports SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being by contributing to animal and indirectly, public health. It also supports SDG 4: Quality Education through experiential learning that enhances the competence of veterinary students. Moreover, it reflects SDG 17: Partnership for the Goals through the collaboration between educational institutions and veterinary clinics in providing meaningful, hands-on learning opportunities.

At the end of the internship, I took time to reflect on the entire experience. I realized how valuable this opportunity was in preparing me to become a competent veterinarian. I gained technical skills, new insights, and feedback from my supervising doctor regarding my participation and understanding throughout the internship. This feedback served as strong motivation for me to continue learning and developing toward becoming a professional and skilled veterinary practitioner in the future.
