UNAIR NEWS Members of Student Activity Unit 51动漫 (WANALA) who are affiliated in Airlangga Indonesia Denali Expedition (AIDEX) team underwent another severe training. This time, AIDEX athlete candidates trained their sledding (dragging a truck tire) technique and carried some weight walking up a winding road in Cangar, Pacet, Mojokerto.
This training, done on Saturday (11/2), is a substitute activity for trail running which is usually conducted every alternate week in the area of Mount Arjuno.
This sledding training was done by 4 athlete candidates namely Septian Rio, Muhammad Faishal Tamimi, Yasak, and Moch Roby Yahya. Besides the athlete team, there was also a supporting team from WANALA members namely Ignatius Cristian Wicaksono (Faculty of Economics and Business), Novi Dwanty (Faculty of Social and Political Sciences), Panji Layang (Faculty of Humanities), Nahdiyatul Ifa (Faculty of Vocational Studies), and Revin Gilang (Faculty of Humanities).
The athlete candidates started walking on 678 meters above sea level (MASL) while the finish line was on the height of 1,610 MASL. The athletes had to take a distance as far as 19.6 kilometers from Obech camping ground to Cangar Hot Water Bath.
淭he sledding started from Obech camping ground Pacet as a basecamp to Cangar hot water bath and then return to starting point, Faishal explained.
According to Faishal, the operational team served to escort the athlete candidates because of the crowded situation in Cangar area. Moreover, the operational team also functioned as medical, activity documentation, as well as consumption team.
淎t 07.00 the team had breakfast, and then at 07.45 they warmed up continued by prayers and started this mountaineering activity at 7.56 in the morning in a cloudy, foggy weather. But at 10 in the morning, the weather was very unfavorable with a gust of rain fell quite hard. However, it didn檛 discourage the expedition team, Faishal described.
淭he team reached Cangar hot water bath at 14.04 to have lunch and break until 15.30 and continued the return trip to basecamp until 18.10, he added.
As stated by thermometer, the hottest temperature at that time was 28.90 C and the coldest which was when the rain fell reached 19.80 C. According to Yasak, the condition in Cangar is far different from the one in Denali. However, such an ascending track can be a media for the athletes to train themselves.
淭his condition here is nothing compared to Alaska, where blizzard (hard cold wind and snow) can suddenly strike. Extreme weather like this encourages the athletes to endure it till the end, Yasak concluded. (*)
