UNAIR NEWS“ Indonesia possesses a very rich biodiversity, which are very potential for medicinal plant. This superiority caught Ayu Dewi Pramita, M.Si, an S-2 student of Biology, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) 51¶¯Âþ™s attention. Ayu researched Sambung Nyawa plant for her thesis.
Through her thesis entitled œGrowth and Flavonoid Content in Sambung Nyawa (Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr)Bud Culture in Solid Medium and Temporary Hydrocooling Bioreactor, Dewi appointed as master best graduate FST with GPA 3.79.
Dewi noted flavonoid content in Sambung Nyawa plant, which had the quality to be used as fever and hypertension remedy. Due to its high usefulness, people needed to preserve it in the form of tissue culture genetic engineering.
Through hard work, the Situbondo-born student finally finished her S-2 study in three years. Dewi never thought of becoming best graduate this December, but she was always optimistic in doing her best in everything she did every day.
œActually there is no motivation whatsoever to become best graduate. I just do what I have to do and do it the best way I can, she said.
She admitted failing many time during research. Dewi almost surrendered. However, thanked to her closest people, such as her parents, teacher™s aide, and her friends who kept motivating her, Dewi finally could finish her thesis satisfactorily.
As change agent, she hoped people started to realize that there were many medicinal plants around the house which was easy to plant and could be used as family medicinal plants.
œI will inform the result of my research publicly, especially how to use Sambung Nyawa as traditional medicine. Sambung Nyawa grows and breeds easily, so it can be used as family medicinal plants, said Dewi. (*)
