“Sadar Diri” Right Choice for Healthy Eyes

UNAIR NEWS“ There is a need for an effective and efficient method to assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing diabetic retinopath. Team of Student Creativity Program in Technology (PKM-T) produces an automatic detection system for diabetic retinopathy which is called Sadar Diri (Smart Automated Detection Software for Diabetic Retinopathy).

Iis Bestia Kumala (Team Leader), with Debrina Rizka, Nurrahmah Wida, Nalindra Berliani and Nitasya Ayu Alamanda Putri, are the five students who made it through 31st PIMNAS at Yogyakarta State University (UNY) with a work titled “Sadar Diri (Smart Automated Detection Software For Diabetic Retinopathy) Based on Artificial Neural Networks at East Java Community Eye Hospital UPT “.

During the presentation practice on Tuesday, August 28, Bestia Kumala outlined the working mechanism of innovation that their team had discovered.According to her, the working mechanism of the device is very simple, so it can save time.

“The retinal image captured by the fundus camera will be connected to the Personal Computer (PC) that has the program installed,” said Bestia.

Furthermore, she added, the software will conduct several image processing and classification processes of normal images or images of diabetic retinopathy. In addition, the program can also classify the severity of Nonproliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NPDR) and Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR).

“This software also hasauser friendlyinterfacedesign easy to operate,” she added.

The software technology can be used as a fast screening and early detection because the diagnosis results can be directly seen on a PC / computer screen. In fact, said Bestia, blindness due to diabetic retinopathy is a health problem that needs to be overcome because blindness will reduce the quality of life and productivity of sufferers, which ultimately can cause social burdens.

“With this technology innovation, we hope it can be used as asecond opinion in diagnosing diabetic retinopathy, in order to improve the quality of health services,” he said.“Sadar diri, the right choice for healthy eyes,” he concluded.(*)
