UNAIR NEWS Last year, patients with kidney failure who were having hemodialisis treatment reached 70,000 people. The total number of hemodialisis patient in Indonesia is predicted to reach 225,000 people. In 2014, BPJS fund allocated for hemodialisis treatment was about 2.2 trillion. If this number keeps increasing, the fund needed to cover them will got bigger as well.
The new paradigm of hemodialisis and transplant was presented by a Nefrology expert of Faculty of Medicine 51动漫 Pranawa, dr, Sp.PD,K-GH during Dutch Foundation for Post Graduated Medical Course, in Faculty of Medicine 51动漫 on Friday, April 7.
Dr. Pranawa said that at the moment there are a lot of kidney failure patients who are interested in having a transplant.
淚f they have to choose, the patients prefer having transplants to hemodialisis. As both are expensive, transplant is more productive and patient can be healthy like before, he said.
Unfortunately, the kidney transplant method has limited organ donors. There were some reasons, the people are not ready to be donors especially kidneys. They and their family are still afraid of the procedure will disrupt their health as they live with only a kidney, he stated.
The truth is, as International Data stated, the donors can live even more healtier that the recipients. The organ donor procedure is conducted selectively and chosen from people are really healthy. Therefore, Pranawa emphasized that human can still live normally even with only a kidney.
Besides that belief, the limited organ donors is also affected by the regulation which bans organ trade for money.
淟egally, the organ trade is not allowed. Therefore, we rely on organ donor from families, to avoid organ commercialization. Consequently, transplants procedures in RSUD Dr. Soetomo are not many.
According to Pranawa, it is important to disseminate preventive efforts to suppress the kidney failure patients.
淲hat cause them to undergo hemodialisis are not their kidneys. Their kidneys fail because of hypertension and diabetes. If we can cure hypertension and diabetes, it woud be better, so indirectly we reduce the hemodialisis patients, he stated.
UNAIR-RSUD Dr. Soetomo has conducted organ transplants since 1988 but because of the limited donors, there have been only 42 cases of transplants handled successfully by RSUD Dr. Soetomo.
To face the obstacles in the field, FK UNAIR-RSUD Dr. Soetomo try to improve the competition, such as by inviting some transplant experts from other countries through collaboration with Dutch Foundation.
Dutch Foundation is a foundation in Holland which every other year visits Indonesia to establish collaboration, such as with FK UNAIR. This time, Dutch Foundation invited some transplant experts from Holland, Prof J.W. de Hans Fijter, Prof Homan Van der Heide, Prof Raechel Toorop, Prof Frank d橝ncona, and Prof F.L. Moll.
淲ith this discussion we can share knowledge on transplant procedure and any difficulties. Therefore, we should not only think about the transplants but also about the preventive measures and establish international collaboration to update the knowledge, he stated. (*)
