UNAIR– For the first time since it was operational on Saturday, August 11, 2018, Ksatria Airlangga Floating Hospital assisted a childbirth of earthquake casualty in North Lombok.A baby boy was born on August 16, 2018 and named Airlangga Gempa Putra.
Contacted via phone on Friday, August 24, dr.Khanisyah Erza Gumilar, SpOG the coordinator of the attending doctors who handled the baby’s birth said that despite being in an emergency hospital, the labor process went smoothly. The birth of the baby was assisted by one midwife and two nurses.
Since docking at Bangsal Port, North Lombok, Ksatria Airlangga Floating Hospital handled dozens of patients every day.The patients come with various conditions.
In the first week for example, most patients experienced limb injuries. In this situation, doctors who are needed more are orthopedic and surgical doctors.
While in the second week and so on, when the intensity of the earthquake began to decrease, the patients who arrived also have various conditions such as with pregnancy, problems of breathing, digestion, skin, and also for post-surgery treatments.
“In this case, there is potential psychological trauma to survivors. The help of psychologists is needed, “said Doctor Erza.
“There were a lot of patients. In one day, SpOG (obstetrics and gynecology specialist, ed) can reach 20 patients,” explained Doctor Erza.
There were volunteers from alumni on duty there, from doctors who were just graduated, surgeons, orthopedic specialists, anesthesiologists and gynecologist. In addition, there were also other volunteers from UNAIR, from mountaineering club (WANALA) and disaster response team (MAHAGANA).
Ksatria Airlangga Floating Hospital cannot be expected to give perfect services like a hospital in general. However, all drugs and medical equipment as much as possible are fulfilled.
IN this regard, Doctor Erza thanked all donors who provided equipment assistance that was not yet available. In time there will be development to improve the services.
For the services provided, Doctor Erza hoped that other institutions will also be inspired by the floating hospital. The service is expected to reach remote areas for example, areas that cannot be reached by plane.
“Programs like this must run continuously,” said Doctor Erza.
Because they are volunteers, doctors working in North Lombok are not staying.Every week, there is different shift for volunteer doctors. This is also to prevent volunteers from being exhausted while on duty.(*)
