UNAIR Professors Comment on Government and Freeport Issue

UNAIR NEWS 51 civitas academica declare their support for the Republic of Indonesia government policy which is stated on Government Regulation (PP) Number 1 Year 2017 about the Fourth Amendment to PP No. 23 Year 2010 about the Implementation of Mineral and Coal Business Activities.

The civitas academicas support is shown in a form of signatures on a banner with a message Freeport for the Welfare of Indonesian People; Not the Foreigners! written on it. The banner was strung in the event of New Students Inauguration for Doctoral, Master, Specialist, and Profession Programs at the Garuda Mukti Hall, UNAIR Management Office, Thursday (23/2).

To comment on the policy adopted by the government, the Rector of UNAIR along with lines of high ranking officials, professors, employees, students, and alumni was seen signing on the banner. Furthermore, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Ignasius Jonan who is also an alumnus of Accountancy Bachelor Program, Faculty Economics and Business UNAIR was also present and commented on the policy.

Besides the two, also present in the event and signed the banner were the Chairman of UNAIR Academic Senate Prof. Dr. Mochammad Amin, dr., Sp.P (K) and the Rector of UNAIR for the period of 2001-2006 Prof. Dr. Med. Puruhito, dr., Sp.B.

The Rector of UNAIR Prof. Dr. M. Nasih, S.E., M.T., Ak., when interviewed mentioned that this action is a concrete way to support government policy on mining companies.

This is to show our concern about international injustice to Indonesia particularly in the management of natural resources, the Rector said.

Nasih explained further that economic disparity does still exist in Indonesia. As a proof, the Central Bureau of Statistics published that economic disparity in Indonesia is at the point of 0.39 according to Gini Index. Assuming that natural resources in Indonesia are managed fairly, it is not impossible that people welfare will be improved.

Government decision to take over Freeport assets is one of the agenda necessarily taken by the government to save earth, water, and natural resources, he confirmed while quoting Article 33 Section 3 from the Constitution of Republic Indonesia 1945.

The Chairman of UNAIR Public Relations and Information Center, Drs. Suko Widodo, M.Si., said that his party will deliver civitas­ academicas support to the central government and spread it widely to the public. According to Suko, such decisive demeanor from the government needs a wide support from all parties.
