UNAIR NEWS– In celebrating its 63rd anniversary, 51动漫 organizes an educational program related to the world of literacy. It was titled Airlangga Book Sale (ABS) 2017.
“This is also a form of UNAIR support, especially the Department of Information and Library (IIP), to the city of Surabaya in achieving the title of literacy city proclaimed by Mayor Tri Rismaharini,” said Diyas Adi Pratama, head of ABS 2017.
Based on United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) data, Indonesia literacy ranks second lowest in the world, at 60th among 61 countries.
In fact, according to the results of the organization’s survey in 2015, among 1,000 people, there is only one Indonesian who likes to read.It means the public reading interest is only 0.0001 percent. The condition is confirmed by the results of the National Library survey in the same year which shows similar things, low category. It was only at 25.1 percent.
Therefore, UNAIR participates in anticipating the low rate of reading interest of the community, especially in Surabaya, through the program.By providing cheap books for students and the general public in the form of ABS 2017.
Airlangga Book Sale 2017 was the second time implemented IIP UNAIR.Themed “Social Movement”, this time theeventwas quite popular. In accordance with the data of the committee, the difference compared to ABS last year was obvious.
“This year on average, per day, there is an increase in the number of visitors. The first day reached 300 visitors. The second day 400 people.Last year the number was stagnant.Until it finished, ABS 2017 3,000 people came from various circles, “said Diyas.
In addition to the exhibition of cheap books, in ABS 2017, there were several other activities, such as talk showsabout the development of literacy in Surabaya;Film Discussion onMenolak Tergusur;book Review;and a charity concert for education at the River School Foundation, the program of the Urban Care community.
Conducted on Monday-Saturday, November 6-11, the bazaar provided cheap books for public, from children’s books, lessons, novels, books on technology, magazines, recipes, history, biography, dictionaries, to college books. The availability of these books is a result of the cooperation of ABS 2017 committee with four publishers, Gramedia, Mizan, Agro Media, and Airlangga University Press (AUP).
Diyas hoped that ABS 2017 implementation could encourage and bring real implications for the literacy program proclaimed by Mayor of Surabaya, by helping to improve the community reading interest through the provision of cheap books.
By doing so, the index calculation orranking of reading interest in Indonesia, especially in Surabaya, increased.“Because, in ASEAN alone, we are defeated by Myanmar. In fact, we are far behind compared to Malaysia, “added the student class of 2014.(*)
