UNAIR NEWS– In the current era of modernization, universities are required to take a role in creating graduates who are able to meet market needs.Based on the data released by Kemenristekdikti, there is only 17.5 percent of college graduates who are absorbed by the industry.
The symposium and discussion of nationalism held by 51动漫 on Wednesday, November 9 on “The Role of Universities in Building a Democratic and Just Indonesia”.
There were three speakers at the discussion. They were Prof.Bagong Suyanto, Professor of Economic Sociology Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UNAIR;Prof.Daniel M. Rosyid, Ph.D., Professor of Marine Technology Faculty, ITS;and Syamsidar Thamrin from the State Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas). In the symposium, they gave their ideas related to the role of universities for the progress of the nation.
Prof.Bagong said, it is the role and the challenge of universities to create graduates who are sensitive and critical to the problems in society.Because, he continued, as the concept put forward by sociologist George Ritzer, what is happening in Indonesia today is university McDonaldisasi as universities produce graduates with principles of fast food restaurants.
“Our challenge, to make sensitive, critical, and empathetic graduates. Not just by building a solid curriculum. Many social problems can not be solved through scientific assumption, “said Prof.Bagong.
In line with Prof.Bagong, Prof.Daniel stated that the challenge of college is to create students who have a learning culture, not just schooling culture.
“We fail to distinguish betweenschooling听补苍诲听learning. So, students are not strong in thinking, “said Prof.Daniel.
In his ideas, Prof.Daniel recommended that every schoolchild should be involved in learning in the community and should know first hand the existing problems.
Meanwhile, according to Syamsidar, education in Indonesia is less teaching children to have competitiveness.Hence, most children are less motivated to outperform other children檚 achievements.
“Think to be a competitor of Mark Elliot Zuckerberg (founder ofFacebook, ed) instead of working forFacebook. Our children should be trained to think there, “said Syamsidar.
The symposium and nationalism discussion was held to celebrate the 63rd Anniversary of UNAIR.Dies Natalis Assembly on Thursday, November 10, will present Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources as well as alumnus of the Faculty of Economics and Business UNAIR, Ignatius Jonan.(*)
