UNAIR NEWS –“A country that takes risks will become a developed country.”Rizal Ramli in a public lecture held in Soetandyo Wignjosoebroto Hall FISIP UNAIR on Friday, October 6.
In a public lecture entitled “”Indonesia’s Economic Potential in Building Independent Nation”, the former Coordinating Minister of Marine Affairs and Resources of Indonesia said that seeing the progress of a country can be done from seeing the history and index of happiness of its citizens.Rizal pointed out, for that measure Indonesia is still left behind with Malaysia and Singapore.
Rizal also said that mentality of a nation is one of the important factors in supporting the progress of a country.Nations with tenacious character and dare to take risks, according to him would be a big and advanced nation.
“There used to be some countries with similar fate to ours.China, South Korea for example.But, these countries are now way ahead.The keys are tenacity and independence, “he explained.
Rizal considered that corruption has made economic growth in Indonesia slow.However, he did not agree if corruption is the main obstacle.The most important thing, according to him, which hampers progress is the quality of human resources.He considered that this nation actually has a smart and excellent resources, but they should complain less and not give up easily.
“If there is a problem, we must be more strong and personally resilient.Not surrender and be spoiled, “he explained.
In addition, Rizal also said that education is the key and solution to support the progress of the nation.In this case, he exemplifies the country of Japan.Japan’s success in bringing the nation’s children through education can be an example for Indonesia.
“Japan educate young generations by sending them to developed countries and when they are back to the country, the make breakthroughs to make Japan as a developed country, “he explained.
Model development was discussed then.According to Boston University graduates, Indonesia still uses a development model that relies on world bank.We have good economy but with debts.For this, he referred to the country of Argentina as a country whose economy was devastated by debt for applying such a model.
“So a country that relies on world bank or neoliberalism is difficult to prosper.In Southeast Asia, our country and the Philippines are implementing the model, “he explained.
Regarding the matter, Rizal provided a solution that with national economy, a country檚 economy can improve, for example Japan.Moreover, the key of economic progress of a nation also lies in the leaders.
“Because they are the the main key of policy,” concluded Rizal.
