UNAIR NEWS A student of the Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG) once again achieves a national accomplishment. A team led by Christabel Maureen Vitaley Sung, together with Naia Naurora Sabilla, won third place nationally in the Popular Scientific Essay competition at Scientific Atmosphere 18, organized by the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Udayana. The team was supervised by Aisyah Rachmadani Putri Gofur drg MKes, who guided them from the preparation stage to the final presentation.

Sung initiated the idea and coordinated the essay writing during the preliminary round. She and Sabilla chose the technology subtheme and integrated artificial intelligence (AI) with the field of cardiology, which is currently developing rapidly in the medical world. After advancing to the final round, the two divided their tasks in a structured manner. Sung prepared the animation video, while Sabilla designed the poster and presentation materials. 淲e wanted to present an innovative solution that aligns with Indonesia檚 needs, Sung said. Their thorough preparation ultimately led them to secure third place nationally.

ECHO-MIND: AI integration in echocardiography

Through their work titled 淓CHO-MIND: Automated Cardiac Image Evaluation Using Diagnostic Neural Intelligence Based on YOLOv8 to Improve Early Detection of Congenital Heart Disease Types ASD, VSD, and PDA in Indonesia, the team integrated YOLOv8-based artificial intelligence (AI) into an echocardiography machine. The system analyzes cardiac images automatically and in real time, then marks suspected abnormalities such as ASD, VSD, and PDA with greater precision and consistency.

The team designed ECHO-MIND as a second opinion tool to help doctors make faster and more consistent decisions. They emphasized that the system does not replace doctors but supports clinical decision-making in the early screening process. The direct integration of AI into the device helps reduce interpretation time and improve the efficiency of healthcare services.

Addressing CHD urgency in Indonesia

The team raised the issue of congenital heart disease (CHD) because the condition is among the most common and serious congenital disorders in infants. Global data show an incidence rate of around 910 cases per 1,000 live births, while Indonesia records more than 43,000 new cases each year.

The team also highlighted the limited number of pediatric cardiologists, which is estimated at around one hundred specialists and mostly concentrated in major cities. This condition leads to delays in diagnosis, particularly in remote areas and regions with limited healthcare facilities. Through ECHO-MIND, the team offered a solution that helps healthcare workers conduct early screening more quickly and accurately. 淭he process was not easy, but we learned a lot about commitment and collaboration, the team said.
