UNAIR NEWS The members of English Literature , Faculty of Humanities 51 (EDSA) presented a mothers love in the play entitled The Verse. This play for English Nite Drama (E-Nite) was put on at Cak Durasim Building, East Java Cultural Park, Thursday (16/3).
The Verse which is of two hours duration is an original script not adapted from any other play scripts. The EDSA team writes their own piece of art with the help of several alumni who understand about play.
The Verse tells a story about a main character Alan who starts to push his mother, Petunia, away as he enters adulthood. Petunia is a widow who raises her only child. Days by days, Alan grows up to be a man who falls for a girl, Mirable, until they finally get married.
Since Alan decided to live with his wife, he has no longer put his mother a priority. While on the other hand Alan is Petunias only child who she keeps supporting every single second. However, regrets always come last. Alan realizes the pouring affection and supports her mother never stops giving just when Petunia passes away.
The Verse play successfully raised the audiences emotions until they finally offered it a thunderous applause. A lot of touching scenes, especially the scene when Mrs. Petunia lulls Alan in her lap, was a comment from one of the audience.
Alans character was successfully played by Mochammad of English Literature, while Petunia was played by Maitsa Jahja. Both are students of English Literature.
The director of The Verse, Lailatul, explained that her party wants to present a play with morals to the audience. The value which we want to deliver in The Verse play is that every mother is in fact a hero. Because in a mothers soul grows exceptional affection which no child will ever know, said Lailatul, the director.
The success of this play is impossible to reach without the spirit to practice and hard work of the artists. Lailatul admitted that there were times when her party felt disorganized in the script writing process and practices. Tight college schedule of EDSA members made them barely practice on the same stage as a whole. However, it can be overcome by the spirit and hard work of the team to hit success on this years E-Nite.
Not less than 400 tickets of the play were successfully sold out, whether presale or on the spot. Certainly most of the audience was students of 51. Moreover, the high ranking officials of the of Humanities were also invited to the play. (*)
