FPK Lecturers Demonstrate Tool Improving Clam Quality in Sedati

UNAIR NEWS “To improve the quality of marine products, especially clams, Eka Saputra S.Pi., M.Si., Dr.Laksmi Sulmartiwi S.Pi., M.Pi., and Kustiawan Tri Pursetyo, S.Pi., M.Vet., as lecturers at Faculty of Fisheries and Marine (FPK) held a dissemination on modern technology to reduce the bad content of clams.

The program titled ‘Community Service for Clam Sanitation Application with Depuration Method in Surabaya Kenjeran Beach Clam Fishermen’s Village’ is a community partnership program funded by Kemenristekdikti realized by the three lecturers at Fish Processing Site (TPI), Kenjeran on Monday, August 4.

Kenjeran is chosen because Kenjeran waters condition, being near the city and industrial area of Surabaya, is exposed to residual production waste so there is possible contamination of heavy metals and other substances absorbed byfilter feeder animals(particle eaters and organic matter) such as clams. The method of depuration demonstrated in the activity can reduce the harmful content in clams.

“With this depuration tool, some harmful substances in clams such as heavy metals or Pb (iron) will be reduced like heavy metals or Pb (iron) only by replacing the type of filter specifically used for reducing certain substances, “said Laksmi as the head of the event.

Laksmi added, this depuration method can easily be interpreted as letting the clams in flowing sea water cleaned with filters and UV light so the shells will cleanse themselves. The event attended by 20 kenjeran clam processors proceeded smoothly as hoped. They were interested in the depuration tool. One of the residents, Ahmad Selamet, claimed that this technology is easy to apply.

“Although ordinary people don’t understand this well, this tool turned out to be quite easy to use for us clam processors,” Ahmad said.

Not only at one dissemination event, activities were carried out in stages through community service in Kenjeran. After preparation and dissemination, the team of lecturers assisted by their students will assist the use of depuration tool that have been given to the community.

“Yes, we will assist the use of tools so they can be used optimally after the placement done by recipient,” explained Laksmi.

Hopefully, after being able to use the equipment optimally, the locals will be helped from an economic standpoint and it reduces the negative stigma on seafood.
