UNAIR NEWS In the context of Health, Indonesia is entering the epidemiological transition phase. It is caused by the increasing cases of non-infectious diseases compared to the infectious diseases.
One of the non-infectious diseases potential to cause other diseases is hypertension. Hypertension can cause heart, stroke, kidney failure and dementia.
It was explained by M. Atoillah Isfandiari, dr., M.Kes, the lecturer of Department of of Public Health 听础颈谤濒补苍驳驳补.
At the moment, heart disease caused by hypertension is the second highest diseases in Indonesia.
淗eart disease is the number one disease in Indonesia. It can be termed as silent killer. Based on some researches, from all mortality cases by non-infectious disease, 17 percent was from stroke and 10 percent from heart disease. Both caused by hypertension, said Athoillah.
There are many causing factors of hypertension. One of them is the life pattern of community.
淲e used to be an agrarian country, the people consume vegetables and fruit. Now, we are becoming an industrial country, we consume too much protein and fat, including salt. Our country has special culinary which mostly use salt and it triggers hypertension, he said.
Beside lifestyle, stress can also trigger hypertension. Stress can be caused by financial problems or jobs.
淲e all have risk factors. Our stressing lifestyle, sleep deprivation because of hardwork can trigger hypertension, he added.
Quoting World Health Organization (WHO), Atoillah encouraged the community to reduce salt consumption.
淲HO encourages to lessen salt consumption. Excessive salt can burden kidneys work, cause more blood volume and hypertension, he said.
The secretary of UNAIR Healthcare Service Center also encouraged the public to routinely check their blood test.
淲ith routine checks, we detected potential diseases early on so we can perform prevention, he added. (*)
