Unair News “ Covid-19 has spread to 34 provinces in Indonesia. Surabaya is one of them with sufficient confirmed cases in Indonesia.
Surabaya is one of the red zone of Covid-19 based on the government updates on . As of May 8th, 2020, the total of cases in Surabaya has reached 592. Thus, the government implements the policy of Large-Scale Social Restriction or PSBB.
Many students from other regions did not return to their hometowns and chose to stay in Surabaya. Many faces difficult financial condition day by day.
The Student Executive Board and UNAIR Puspas have worked together distributing logistics for students who live far from their hometown and stay in Surabaya. Satria Aji, the Deputy of the Student Executive Board (BEM), said that the staple food packages are for UNAIR students who need help. The criteria of the student they supported are the ones who live far from their hometown and whose parent has low income.
Assisted by Puspas, this donation comes from all elements of the community. The food packages include rice, noodles, sardines, instant food, oil, eggs, corned beef. 103 packages have been distributed in three periods. One of them is on Friday, May 8th, 2020.
The students come from various cities around East Java and outside the province as Medan, Jakarta, Lombok, and other cities. They live in areas near campus, such as Karang Menjangan, Kedung Sroko, Mogen, Mulyosari, Sutorejo, and Kedung Tarukan.
Supporting this activity, the Director of Student Affairs UNAIR, Dr. M. Hadi Subhan, SH., MH., CN., said the collaboration between Student Executive Board and Puspas was good. The mission of the Puspasitself is to contribute to the academic community, especially for students with financial difficulties. The Student executive board (BEM) is a representative for students.
From this activity, Hadi hopes that students who still live in Surabaya during PSBB can learn actively and do their studies well.
“Do not return to your hometown because the government forbids that to prevent the spread of Covid-19 from Surabaya, which is a Covid-19 red zone to their respective villages,” Hadi said.
The Student Executive Board also has other social activities, such as distributing 2,000 masks and hand sanitizers, providing education related to physical distancing, and distributing necessities to citizens in Surabaya. Furthermore, they also plan to provide a kind of public kitchen for people who are still working outside, such as pedicab drivers, motorcycle taxis, and others.
