Students to Conduct Community Service Program in Madura

UNAIR NEWS There were 25 students of 51动漫 ready to serve in the end of East Java, Masakambing Island. They are participants of “Expedisi Nusantara Jaya” program or ENJ who will start studying with the community next 25 September.

This activity is programmed by the Coordinating Ministry for the Ministry of Marine Affairs. It has been held for the third time since 2015 and it shows the government’s commitment to make Indonesia as a maritime axis of the world.

Through this program, young people and students are invited to come into direct contact with communities in outermost and remote islands throughout Indonesia.

Coordinator of ENJ UNAIR who is also a student of the Faculty of Public Health, Anca Laika, said that he and his colleagues are ready to devote themselves to the residents in Masakambing Island located in Sumenep regency.

“We are ready to sail back to do community service on the island of 3T (Outermost, Remote and Disadvantaged) in East Java,” said Anca.

Offer program

To be a participant of 2017 ENJ, students are required to attend a pre-determined series of selections. One of the criteria to pass is the experience of social activities students have ever done.

“Indeed, one of the assessment points is the social activities that students have done. The goal is to avoid them being shocked when they are in the field. Sometimes the situation on the field is different than expected, said M. Sholahuddin Al Ayyubi, one of the representatives of Perintis Nusantara Jaya East Java.

After passing a series of selection process, students from various faculties will go to Masakambing Island and conducted community service for 21 days. The area is also determined by the group.

Anca said that the selection of the location is based on his experience during the ENJ program in 2016. He sees the condition of the Masakambing community still needs to be empowered.

“They still need help in all aspects of life.Educational facilities are minimal, there are only madrasah. In Masakambing Island there is also no puskesmas, only polindes. In terms of economics, the population works as fishermen and labors in Malaysia. We want to improve their condition slowly so their conditions are feasible, “said Anca.

There are many programs that will be undertaken by ENJ students in 2017. In education, one of them will also establish reading parks in the local area.According to Anca, the limitations of electronic media such as television make the reading interest of children is quite high.Unfortunately, the high interest is not supported with adequate facilities.

“In Masakambing, the children have high interest in reading but there are no books to read. So, we want to make reading house in the dock of Masakambing, “said Anca who is also a student of 2015 FKM.

In other areas, local residents will be involved to process organic waste, follow the counseling about dengue fever, plant mangrove and vegetables in pots.

“There are many programs that we will execute there to build and empower Masakambing community. So, we really hope that our students and alumni will participate in helping and supporting our work programs. Our activities can be monitored through Instagram account in @ enjunair2017, “he concluded.
