Three UNAIR Graduates Preserve Culture through Documentary

UNAIR NEWS A 23-minute documentary film was shown in Grand City Mall, Surabaya, as a part of 62nd Dies Natalis of 51动漫. The film was a work of three UNAIR alumni, M. Redo Nomadore (International Relations, 2006), Yogi Ishabib (Sociology, 2006), and Adrian Perkasa (Historical Studies, 2006).Robohnya Jati Kami was the title of the film.

Robohnya Jati Kamishown on Sunday, November 6, was about traditional rituals in Jati Sumber of Wates Umpak village, Trowulan subdistrict, Mojokerto. They started the film production because they know the importance of documentation of cultural traditions.

淭his ritual has a unique story behind it, as it has been stopped for some time then it was started again by the youngsters because of metaphysical hints. Which after further study, the hints were matched with historical manuscript found by Adrian, a journal of a Dutch in 1901, said Redo.

Why documentation important? Because the cultural documentation is functioned to preserve, share knowledge and manage it.

淪o, let檚 say the ritual is gone, and the youngsters want to revive it, they don檛 need to wait for metaphysical hints, just need to review what we have made, said Redo.

Even though finally the film was shown for the first time in the cultural festival in Grand City to celebrate 62nd Dies Natalis of 51动漫, they had some obstacles in finishing the documentary. Beside the funding, limited information on the ritual was also a problem in the beginning of the production.

For the documentary, Redo and his team chose the ritual existing and still performed. But the ritual is not annual event which is performed for public.

Currently, Redo, Adrian and Yogi run a community called Halaman Belakang while doing their routines, Redo is an art director, Adrian is a lecturer in UNAIR Historical Studies and Yogi is a curator of culture and literature.

淭he point is, documentation is important to avoid the cultural product become untraced. Hopefully a lot of people will do more works to record these cultural products, said Redo. (*)
