UNAIR NEWS The causes and impacts of climate change bring problems in Health sector. Various problems from water quality, malnutrition, food security to the impacts of catastrophic disaster predicted to happen. The risks of climate change were elaborated by Sharad Adykary of World Health Organization (WHO).
Sharad said that without effective responses and policies, climate change will bring those problems. First, water quality and quantity. It is predicted that by 2050, thepeople living in water stressed basins will be doubled. Second, food security. In some African countries, the results of agriculture are predicted to fall into half by 2020.
Third, infectious diseases control. It is predicted that by 2030, the population with Malaria in Africa will go up and reach 170 million. 淲hile people with dengue virus will reach 2 billion by 2080, said the environmental health advisor of WHO.
Fourth, disaster protection. According to the data Sharad disclosed, there is an increasing exposure to coastal flooding and an extreme drought in land area.
Regarding the impacts of climate change in health sector, Sharad as the keynote speaker in 1stSEHAT (Seminar on Environment and Health) Toward SDG檚 Achievement 2030: Integration System on Environment and Health Sustainability, suggested the researchers and policy makers to update their data and shared information.
Beside Sharad, there was also Dr. 揑ng. Hendro Wicaksono, a researcher from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), German, who talked about 淪ustainability of Smart City in European Union. Hendro said that, cities in Europe have gone through changes since early 1800. If the cities used to be categorized as garden city and broadacre city then they are now heading towards future city.
淚n future cities, there are some measures taken to reduce the negative impacts of climate change. There is a plan to reduce 80% of glass house gas by 2050, the use of sustainable energy to 80 % by 2050, every building can reduce energy consumption to 80% and reduce transportation emission to 40%, said Hendro.
To create a sustainable city, implementations from many aspects are needed. From the socio-cultural aspect, developmental related policy will involve all the inhabitants while from the transportation, cra sharing is implemented.
Head of SEHAT committee Dr. Rr. Azizah, S.H., M.Kes, hoped that the international seminar could connect the university, companies, government and professional organization in realizing healthy environments.
