UNAIR KKN Students Initiates Garbage Bank in Bringkang Village, Gresik

UNAIR NEWS –One of the most prominent problems in the Gresik region is the lack of attention to waste management.A lot of garbage is scattered on the side of roads and bridges, including in Village Bringkang, one of the villages in Menganti subdistrict which does not yet have adequate waste management area.

From the monitoring of BBM KKN team at the location, most of the residents threw garbage in the back of the house and then burned it.That activity will, in a way, cause air pollution and unpleasant odors and cause flooding if the garbage disrupted the water flow.

For this reason, UNAIR KKN BBM team in Bringkang Gresik Village received an assignment from the Environmental Office of Gresik Regency to disseminate the importance of waste management.As a solution, the 58th UNAIR KKN team collaborated with NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) We Hasta to hold a Garbage Bank dissemination for Bringkang residents.It was begun with the local women.

The activity was started with the presentation about waste by one of the students, Trias Wisnu Budi, undergraduate student of Environmental Health FKM UNAIR.It was followed with Heni Larasati, active member of We Hasta NGO for 9 years.In her presentation she conveyed about the Garbage Bank, starting from the concept, how to work, and the benefits.

Dissemination received a positive response from participants, the women ask questions related to garbage bank.From the representatives of PKK Bringkang, the majority were interested in forming a Garbage Bank in their neighborhood.

After conducting dissemination, interest from PKK mothers was seriously responded by KKN students and finally 3 Garbage Banks were formed thanked to the cooperation of the locals and NGO We Hasta.The Three Garbage Banks are Menteng Garbage Bank 31 Menteng Complex, Garbage Bank RW 02. Bringkang, and Sumber Makmur Garbage Bank Oma Indah Bringkang.

Launchingand initial weighingactivities wereconducted at Oma Indah Housing Village Bringkang on Saturday, July 28, 2018.

“We would like to thank UNAIR KKN students who have given us atrigger, so that they are able to initiate to form a Garbage Bank in our environment,” said the chief of neighborhood area IX Bringkang Village in his speech.

In the future, the Garbage Bank will be accompanied by a cadre of We Hasta NGO and will be weighed every month.Inthe launchingactivity,PKK activists also hoped that through the Garbage Bank, Bringkang Village could represent Menganti District in the Gresik Regency hygiene competition in the future.

“Hopefully this Garbage Bank, can be a pilot for other RWs and RTs in Bringkang Village, and generally for Menganti Subdistrict,” said Trias, one of the student participants of UNAIR 58th KKN in her speech.
