UNAIR NEWS Intellectual property protection, particularly patents, plays a critical role in safeguarding innovations from imitation or unauthorized claims. However, Indonesia still faces significant challenges in increasing its number of international patent filings under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) scheme. Since joining the PCT, Indonesia has contributed around 224 international patents.

In response, the Institute for Journal Development, Publication, and Intellectual Property Rights (LPJPHKI) at 51动漫 organized a workshop titled Tips and Tricks for Writing International Patents under the PCT-WIPO Scheme. Held at the Dewa Ruci Hall, Airlangga Convention Center (ACC), MERR-C Campus, the event featured Ir. Dadan Samsudin, M.Si, from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI), Ministry of Law and Human Rights, as the speaker.

In his presentation, Ir. Samsudin emphasized that one of the key steps in drafting a patent specification is conducting a thorough State of the Art or prior art search. This process ensures that an invention meets the novelty requirement before being submitted at the international level.

淧atents are designed to protect our work. This process helps determine patentability, avoid research duplication, and prevent infringement on existing patents, he explained.

He further noted that prior art references are not limited to existing patent documents. Any publicly available information, including scientific journals, conference proceedings, and even student thesis can serve as comparative material that may challenge the novelty of an invention.

Ir. Samsudin also outlined seven key strategies for conducting prior art searches, ranging from identifying the subject of the invention and exploring alternative keywords to understanding patent classification systems such as IPC and CPC. Participants were guided to use global patent databases, including PDKI, Patentscope, Espacenet, and Google Patents.

淭hrough hands-on practice, inventors can go beyond theory and learn how to analyze patent documents in real time. This is important for understanding market targets and defining the scope of protection under the PCT-WIPO scheme, he said during the session.

Beyond theoretical discussions, LPJPHKI also provided intensive mentoring for participants. Through this initiative, 51动漫 aims to improve both the quantity and quality of international patents produced by its academic community.

淧atents exist to protect both our ideas and our innovations. With strong search strategies, we hope UNAIR檚 inventions will not only be innovative but also globally competitive and legally protected on the international stage, he concluded.
